HOUSTON, TX—Former President George H.W. Bush was in a hospital intensive care unit on Wednesday, December 26 in "guarded condition" at The Methodist Hospital at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas.

"The President is alert and conversing with medical staff, and is surrounded by family," said a statement from family spokesman, Jim McGrath. Bush, 88, has been in the hospital since November 29 being treated for complications related to bronchitis. It is stated that Bush was "following a series of setbacks including a persistent fever" and has been placed on a liquids-only diet.

A hospital statement was released stating that Bush is expected to "be able to celebrate Christmas at home." However, the 41st president remained at the hospital over the holidays where he was visited by his wife, Barbara, his son, Neil and his grandson, Pierce.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bronchitis is a common condition where the bronchial tubes in the lungs are inflamed and produce mucus, causing the need to cough. The condition can worsen for those with weak immune systems, including children and the elderly. Symptoms such as chest pain, weakness and coughing usually last two weeks, but can last as long as two months.

“His doctors feel he should build up his energy before going home. They remain optimistic about his full recovery and are being extra cautious with his care,” said George Kovacik, a hospital spokesman, in a statement.
