Jody Arias and Travis Alexander.
PHEONIZ, AZ—The jury in the Jody Arias murder trial resumed deliberations Thursday, May 23 after declaring that they could not come to a unanimous decision. The jury, who convicted Arias for murdering ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander, have yet to determine whether Arias deserves the death penalty or life in prison.
Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Sherry Stephens directed the jurors to continue deliberating on Wednesday, May 22 in an effort to reach a clear a decision. While she mentioned she did not “wish to force a verdict," the eight men and four women jury, was encouraged to listen to one another and write down their thoughts in order to help reach a decision.
If the jury returns without a verdict once again, another jury will be selected for the sentencing. The new panel would hear arguments from both sides before deliberating. If the second jury ends-up not being able to reach a unanimous verdict, Arias will be sentenced to life in prison with or without the possibility of parole.
Arias, 32, was reported saying that, if convicted, she would rather be executed than spend the rest of her life in prison. However, during deliberations Arias stood in front of the jury and pleaded that they spare her life for the sake of her family.
