Posted by Nedda Alishahi on Mar 19, 2013 - 8:06:25 PM

HAWTHORNE, NV—Seven Marines are reported to have been killed as a result of a Marine Corps training procedure that went wrong at Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada late Monday night. It is also reported that eight other individuals have been hospitalized due to the accident.

The cause of the deaths and injuries is due to the premature and unexpected explosion from a 60 mm mortar round. Officials will not be releasing any names of those killed in the accident until 24 hours after every family member has been notified.

The Hawthorne Army Depot is a facility used to store as well as destroy ammunition that is no longer going to be in use by the military. It is also a training facility for Special Forces. For the 60 mm mortar, three or four Marines are needed to operate it and usually others observe the training nearby, causing those in the vicinity to have been in danger during the explosion.

The incident at Hawthorne Army Depot is said to be under investigation to find out if the Marines using the weapon followed the correct procedures in handling it or if the incident was a result of a malfunction that occurred in the manufacturing of a certain group of 60 mm mortars.
