Remembering Alex Teves
Posted by Claire Pelonis on Jul 26, 2012 - 12:19:04 AM

AURORA, CO—Of the twelve victims who died in last week’s Colorado massacre, four were young men shielding their girlfriends from the bullets. One of these heroes is Alexander Teves.

Alex Teves graduated from Desert Vista High School in Ahwatukee, and was living in Denver while attending the University of Denver to earn a degree in psychology.

Teves, 24, attended the midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” with his girlfriend, Amanda Lindgren. When the suspect began shooting, Teves covered Lindgren with his own body to protect her from harm.

"He held me down and he covered my head and he said, "Shhh stay down, it's OK. Shh, just stay down.'  So I did," Lindgren said in an interview. When asked if she thought Teves knew he was putting himself in danger for her, she tearfully replied, "I know he did. He'd do anything for me. He always told me that, too. I just wish I could have protected him the same way he protected me."

Alex’s father, Tom Teves, remembers his son as well. "He had courage. He would have stood up," Tom Teves said. "I was gonna stand up for him. He killed my son. He killed the best man on earth. It's his loss too."

The victim’s father attended suspect James Holmes’ first court appearance. "I wanted to get a look at him (James Holmes) and he didn't look like much," said Tom Teves to CNN's Anderson Cooper from Aurora. "But it's not about him, it's about the victims."

Tom Teves has asked the media not to focus on the suspect but to turn their attention to the victims.

“I know now more than ever that there is a God, because of Alex," Tom Teves said. "Because Alex is still coming through. Because that's the kind of man he is.  That's the kind of goodness that was in him."
