Victims Of the Aurora, Colorado Shooting
Posted by Ivetta Babadjanian on Jul 20, 2012 - 1:24:30 PM

COLORADO—One of the 12 victims killed during the shooting in Aurora,  Colorado on Friday, July 21 is Jessica Ghawi. She was a young sportscaster and blogger from Texas who interned at a Denver radio station and went by the name Jessica Redfield. Her brother, Jordan, confirmed her death on Twitter and his personal blog early Friday morning.

"
Well this could easily be the worst night of my life," tweeted Ghawi. He updated his blog regularly every time he received new information on the shooting and the condition of his sister. According to his blog, she was shot once in the leg and again in the head which initially lead to her death.

"Coroner now has me listed as next of kin. Official cause of death is severe cranial cerebral trauma caused by a penetrating GSW to the head. Essentially, she died quickly and painlessly. Now we will begin the process of bringing her home to celebrate her life," wrote Ghawi on his blog.

Merely a month ago, Redfield survived a shooting at the Eaton Centre mall in Toronto as she left the area minutes before the incident began. During the shooting, one person was killed and a handful of others were wounded. Redfield wrote about her near-death experience on her blog:

"I can't get this odd feeling out of my chest. This empty, almost sickening feeling won't go away. ”¦ It's hard for me to wrap my mind around how a weird feeling saved me from being in the middle of a deadly shooting."

"I was shown how fragile life was," Redfield wrote. "I saw the terror on bystanders' faces. I saw the victims of a senseless crime. I saw lives change. I was reminded that we don't know when or where our time on Earth will end. When or where we will breathe our last breath. ”¦ I say all the time that every moment we have to live our life is a blessing. So often I have found myself taking it for granted."

"Every hug from a family member. Every laugh we share with friends. Even the times of solitude are all blessings. Every second of every day is a gift. After Saturday evening, I know I truly understand how blessed I am for each second I am given."

Ghawi tweeted that a memorial service for his sister will be held in her hometown of San Antonio on July 28, more details will follow.

As of press time, the following names have been released as the victims who died during the shooting:

Micayla Medek, 23, was a Hinkley High School graduate and was attending the Community College of Aurora. “I’m a simple independent girl who’s just trying to get her life together while still having fun,” she wrote on her Facebook profile.

Alex Sullivan had just turned 27 and was celebrating his birthday with his friends and his first wedding anniversary which was on Sunday. His family released a statement stating, "The Sullivan family lost a cherished member of their family today. Alex was smart, funny, and above all loved dearly by his friends and family."

John Larimer, 27, served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Aurora, Texas. A flag outside his former high school, Crystal Lake South High School, flies at half staff in his honor.

Matt McQuinn tried to shield his girlfriend, Samantha Yowler, and her older brother during the shooting and was shot and killed. She resides in the hospital with gunshot wounds but is expected to make a full recovery.

Veronica Moser, 6, was the youngest victim killed during the shooting. Her mother, Ashley Moser, is in critical condition with a bullet wound in her throat and abdomen.

Jon Blunk was reported to have tried to protect his girlfriend by laying his body on top of her. His girlfriend, Jansen Young, is alive and well.

Sgt. Jesse Childress, 29, was a cyber-systems operator for the Buckley Air Force.
