MANHATTAN—A violent gas explosion injured twelve people on Thursday, July 11 in downtown Manhattan. A building on 17 Pike Street near East Broadway in Chinatown partially collapsed as a result of the explosion.

Three of the twelve injured are in critical condition and have been immediately hospitalized due to burns and smoke inhalation. Four people injured included firefighters who were involved in the rescue scene.

The cause of the collapse has not been determined, but according to 1010 WINS and city fire department spokesman Jim Long, it happened in the Piao Liang Ren Sheng Beauty salon that was located on the ground floor of the five story building. CBS New York, and New York Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne, reported that the cause of the fire might have been from a gas explosion on the first floor.

According to FDNY Fire Chief Robert Boyce, there was “a fire and an explosion on the first floor. We had minimum collapse, but heavy fire on the first floor with extension to the second and third floor.”

The fire department got the initial emergency call around 12:45 p.m. and by 1.30 p.m. they tweeted that the fire was under control.

Initial searches of the building have been completed, but secondary searches are in motion. Witnesses claimed having seen firefighters lift an unconscious man who was trapped under rubble.
