Global Warming Is Warming Up In Schools

LOS ANGELES —Many universities and business schools have awakened to the fact that it is important to learn how our changing environment can have an effect on many businesses. Unless there are changes in the way that some of the commercial plants are giving off pollution, in today’s growing knowledge about global warming, these businesses can financially go downhill.
Along with classes on finance, accounting, and marketing, students are now enrolling in classes in environmental concerns in today’s business schools. Fifty per cent of the commercial schools are requiring a course in environmental studies in order to complete their business studies.
Several of the administrators at these schools are beginning to realize how important it is to know about global warming and how much industries as well as other factors play an important role in the climate change that has been taking place in our environment.
The new courses are combining traditional lectures along with hands on learning how corporate can change their practices. The course includes the science behind the environmental issues, the challenges it creates in business and government, and a discussion on possible solutions.
“We wanted to educate students about what is going on, so that they will know the facts, and also convince them that there is something that can be done about it.” said Richard Locke who helped design the program.
Some of the instructors at these schools are amazed as to how many students are showing such interest in these classes. One instructor thought that this type of course would only attract students who are interested in the environment and wanted to do something about it.
Students at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley are required to take a course on ethics and social responsibility and climate change.
David Vogel, professor of business ethics at Haas says, ”Students take this issue very seriously and come to learn that voluntary corporate action only goes so far.”
They have come to realize that new business practice can make a change in our changing climate.
Vogel states that environmental issues have been a part of the curriculum at Haas School of Business since the 1970’s, but at that time, students did not take the studies seriously. In today’s world, since global warming has become such an important issue, students care a great deal about working for a company that is considered socially responsible.
Students now feel that the more they know about pollution, the better their chances are in the job market.
