LAUREL CANYON—Earlier in the week, I had the opportunity to catch up with local actor and musician Greg Cipes, who currently can be seen on ABC’s “General Hospital” and Lifetime’s docu-series “Roseanne’s Nuts,” starring the infamous comedian and actress Roseanne Barr and her family. On “Roseanne's Nuts,” which airs on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on Lifetime, Cipes is constantly seen as the hippie in the tent out back in Roseanne’s yard, and as “GH’s” drug dealer. But these roles are not the only things the handsome star is up to.
In Port Charles, there is a man who is just as dangerous as the character that is played by Academy Award-nominated actor James Franco. Greg’s character JT on “General Hospital” is the complicated and devious drug dealer who is often causing trouble for Port Charles citizens. “I enjoy playing JT very much. He’s nothing like me, but I manage to channel some of my attributes to make the character work,” said Cipes.
Cipes seems to be stirring up the drama everywhere these days—from a tent in Roseanne Barr’s backyard on a macadamia nut farm in Hawaii to avoiding the LAPD on weekends when he’s outside of the legendary Canyon Country Market on Laurel Boulevard. Cipes announces on “Roseanne’s Nuts” that he’s a witness of the divine who also describes himself as a “flexitarian,” which is defined as a vegetarian who occasionally eats meat, who starts to ruffle the feathers of Roseanne’s son Jake and her domestic partner Johnny. Handsome Cipes is Roseanne’s personal yoga instructor, and he has taught her Kundalini yoga techniques and the benefits of eating organic raw food. “Yes, Johnny, Jake and I butt heads at times, but they are great guys, and I love working with them and Roseanne,” said the star. “And ‘General Hospital’ is also a great show to be on. A director on the show recently told me that they are definitely not done with JT.”
When asked what advice he can give viewers of the series “Roseanne’s Nuts” that just love the ongoing banter between the three guys in Roseanne’s life, Greg laughed, then said, “That’s just part of the show, we are pretty cool, very opinionated, we wind up on the same page. They are very logical men.”
Cipes is best known for his incredibly long voiceover résumé, which includes the role Beast Boy in the “Teen Titans” animated series and “Kevin Levin” on “Ben 10: Alien Force,” both of which aired on Cartoon Network. Cipes will also voice Michaelangelo in the Nickelodeon revival of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” cartoon alongside Sean Astin and Jason Biggs.
During the interview, Greg gave me great recipes for macadamia nuts, just as he’s been giving Roseanne and her guys great ideas over the past few weeks of the series. The always polite, free-spirited young actor has an infectious positive personality that he is well known for throughout the industry.
In his free time, the actor can be found hanging out at Café Gratitude or on a date with the newest U.S. presidential candidate, Roseanne Barr. However, you can also see and hear Cipes and his band mates and friends outside of the Canyon Country Store in the heart of Laurel Canyon on Saturday mornings. “We break whenever the police stop by to tell us to halt. But stick around, we start right back after they leave. Freedom is the most precious thing you can have. I am free in the moment, witness of the divine. Now I get to see that manifested,” concluded actor Greg Cipes.
