The Real Reason Zachary Quinto Came Out
Posted by Contributor on Oct 23, 2011 - 10:02:52 PM

HOLLYWOOD—Last week actor Zachary Quinto, who starred in the recent JJ Abrams version of “Star Trek,” as Mr. Spock came out to the world and said, “I am a gay man.” The talented character actor, who also stars in the hit NBC series “Heroes” as a villain didn’t make the announcement to garner publicity or to offend anyone. Quinto was so moved by the death of a young man whose suicide was because he had been bullied by his teenage peers into feeling unloved, unwanted and hopeless.

“When I found out that Jamey Rodemeyer killed himself, I felt deeply troubled. but when I found out that (Jamey Rodemeyer) had made an ”˜It Gets Better’ video only months before taking his own life. I felt indescribable despair. I also made an ”˜It Gets Better’ video last year, in the wake of the senseless and tragic gay teen suicides that were sweeping the nation at the time. but in light of Jamey’s death, it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it, is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality,” said Zachary Quinto.

With Quinto’s new hit film “Margin Call” being released just days before his admission to the world that he is in fact a gay man in America, it was very difficult for the handsome actor to make red carpet premiere events for the film without being asked about it from the media and from fans. Even though he wanted to make sure his statements were out there to help others, who are battling depression, peer pressure and even bullying because they are different. Zach wants everyone to be involved in solving the problems the kids around the world face every day when they feel they may be different from others. He wanted to be a face and name that millions of people can identify with. Being a beloved Hollywood and entertainment icon is something that few actors and actresses in the industry every use to help others, only to benefit themselves.

Quinto is making a difference. He went on to say, “Our society needs to recognize the unstoppable momentum toward unequivocal civil equality for every gay lesbian bisexual and transgender citizen of this country. Gay kids need to stop killing themselves because they are made to feel worthless by cruel and relentless bullying. Parents need to teach their children principles of respect and acceptance. we are witnessing an enormous shift of collective consciousness throughout the world.”

Zach Quinto’s mission is to change the way kids feel about each other and themselves. But also to use his celebrity to help gain acceptance for people who may not be able to find the support he as a celebrity and major star is able to receive. “We are at the precipice of great transformation within our culture and government. I believe in the power of intention to change the landscape of our society, and it is my intention to live an authentic life of compassion and integrity and action. (Jamey Rodemeyer’s) life changed mine. and while his death only makes me wish that I had done this sooner, I am eternally grateful to him for being the catalyst for change within me. Now I can only hope to serve as the same catalyst for even one other person in this world; that I believe, is all that we can ask of ourselves and of each other,” concluded film actor and producer Zachary Quinto.

Zach found thousands of fans willing to support him in the hours and days following his announcement. Quinto fan Maura Sadaat said, “As a long-term fan I couldn’t imagine it’s possible to love and respect (Zachary Quinto) even more, but he’s just exceeded my expectations. Zach, an amazing person and a true inspiration. Thank you from all my heart for changing the way I feel about the world, now I do believe there’s hope.” “How do I reduce all my emotions down to a single sound-bite? I am very moved by (Zack’s) decision to come out, as I know it must have torn him apart to do so. But he felt morally obligated. I am straight and 48. 40 years ago there was no mention of alternate lifestyle choices, its going to require my entire generation to die off in order to make society more accepting of gays. I was a big fan of Zack’s before his coming out, and now my love for him has reached the stratosphere! He should get on twitter more because we want to see what he is up to on a day to day basis,” Quinto fan Kevin Travers.

Zachary Quinto’s real reason for coming out, was to make a difference and help others, to help create a society where even one of the most handsome, famous and talented actors can have a teaching moment for us all. His fans are solidly behind him, the industry respects him, and what’s next professionally for the superstar? The following feature films in production or being released in the next few months. “Girl Walks Into a Bar,” “What’s Your Number?”, “You Were Never Here” and the yet untitled “Star Trek” sequel, which Quinto will reprise the role of Spock.
