On the Industry

This Week In Hollywoodland
Posted by Tommy Garrett on Dec 20, 2009 - 9:31:32 PM

BEVERLY HILLS This Week in Hollywoodland the industry began its annual shutdown of productions, TV shows, movie studios and the like. Though I caught up with a couple of friends, Larry Manetti and Thom Bierdz. I’ll share what we discussed. Also, with Golden Globe nominations and SAG award nominations announced, Oscar is not far away. Before the Hollywood Foreign Press members complete their voting and announce their winners for Golden Globe, I’ll give you some of my choices for Oscar nods in 2010. The Tiger Woods scandal completed week three and Elin Woods has a master plan.

Larry Manetti is one of the most kind and gracious guys in Hollywood. We shared a friendship with icon Frank Sinatra and I can honestly say, I see a lot of Ole Blue Eyes in Larry. He’s a man with great talent and a big heart who can’t stand to see suffering or people in need. Next week I’ll be reviewing Larry’s acclaimed biography “Aloha Magnum.” Stars from Tony Curtis to Oscar-winner Ernest Borgnine rave about this tell all. Larry not only loved Frank [Sinatra] but chronicles in his book how actor Robert Conrad was so instrumental in his early career. “Tommy, it starts off with me leaving Chicago, an actor, then having Shirley Hamilton tell me that I was done there, that I needed to head to Hollywood. A bit shaken and scared I took off. On the way to Hollywood, I stopped in Vegas, became an assistant casino host. From there I went to Hollywood and looked up Robert Conrad, who advised me that I could be his stand-in for ‘The Wild, Wild West.’ It wasn’t long before I was auditioning for Stephen J. Cannell and before long landed, ‘Baa Baa Black Sheep,” said Larry. You can get a copy of “Aloha Hawaii” by going to LarryManetti.com.

The prolific actor has completed “The Sinatra Club,” which features stories about John Gotti and others from famous exploits like the Gotti gang’s robbery of a Brinks truck. The film will be out in a few months. Proving that talent runs in the family, Larry’s handsome son Lorenzo [Manetti] is writing a script called “Good Luck, John Sparks” which is described as a romantic comedy. Larry and Lorenzo are working hard on that project as well.

Larry has also been offered a Podcast series on the Internet in which he’d be the newest celebrity to interview the most famous and popular people today. He and I could do a whole series about our Frank Sinatra memories.

However, Larry’s first guest may end up being golf great Tiger Woods, whose so far three week adultery scandal has brought attention to sixteen women and counting. The latest alleged mistress is a forty plus year old woman named Theresa Rogers who is reportedly being represented by uber talented L.A. defense attorney Gloria Allred. Ms. Allred would not confirm or deny she is representing Ms. Rogers. While friends close to Elin Woods are talking. They say Elin is determined to divorce Tiger, but not before allowing all of the women involved with Tiger to come out and discuss their affairs with him in order to get a more sympathetic hearing in divorce case. Here’s hoping the golf great stops at sixteen and doesn’t go for the lucky 18. Elin and the two kids will be spending Christmas with her family in Sweden.

“Days of Our Lives” actor James Reynolds is taking time out of his busy schedule and time away from his family for the holidays while traveling overseas to rally and support the troops who are in Afghanistan and Iraq. Thanks Jim for your service to our great men and women, the people who keep us all safe. Speaking of soaps, I hope fans saw my pal Ronnie Marmo working with award winning movie star James Franco on Thursday on “General Hospital.” Marmo has been on “GH” for the past six months and is doing a great job.

Last week we reported that Thom Bierdz who portrays Phillip Chancellor, III on CBS’s “The Young and the Restless” had gone to Atlanta for a charity event and book signing. We are happy to report both were very successful. Thom called me the minute he returned and reported, “The event was at OUTWRITE, I was introduced, then read from my memoir, got emotional in parts, then did question and answers for about 45 minutes. Everyone was very receptive,” said Thom. Not only did Thom appear at OUTWRITE, but he also was a guest on the CBS affiliate station in Atlanta, where he raved about his boss Maria Arena Bell and he tells Canyon News that he shared some of the email responses from fans. “I have shared in emails with Maria how great she is doing, and I am jazzed to be included.” Thom concluded, “People drove for hours, some from as far as Mississippi to meet me. Last weekend was a chance for me to give back by appearing at an out and equal event. I also painted a painting which sold at the event and the money is to go to their scholarship fund. They are about equality for all individuals in the workplace.” For more information on Thom's personal appearance go to Out & Equal offers awards with holiday cheer — Project Q Atlanta

Thom Bierdz also reported how much he loved Atlanta and his stay at the famed Artmore Hotel was an amazing experience. “I didn’t expect Atlanta to have every kind of architecture, and was really pleased our hotel, the Artmore, looked like the most charming place in the city. The exterior reminded me of a first class European hotel. The inside was modern and friendly, and we got to know Randy, a very cute bartender with a southern accent. Rooms were sleek and contemporary, each with a wide-screen TV that played classic black and white movies, like we were in some Hollywood museum. Best thing though was how quiet it was.”

This week we had the announcement from the HFPA naming Golden Globe nominations. I’m going to accelerate a bit and give my choices for the Oscar. With ten nominations for Best Picture this year, as we had in the old days, I believe these should definitely be included. “Irene In Time,” “Invictus,” “New Moon,” “Precious” and “Avatar.” Lead Actress hands down these ladies shined through incredibly. Hilary Swank, Mo’Nique, Emily Blunt, Sandra Bullock and Tanna Frederick. Lead Actor, Jeff Bridges, George Clooney and Tobey Maguire. Supporting Actress nominees should include Karen Black, Penelope Cruz, Anna Kendrick and Julianne Moore. With Supporting Actors, there are too many to mention. However, just give the award to Matt Damon, who transformed himself into Hollywood’s best supporting actor this year in “Invictus.”

Next week I will be reviewing a hilariously funny and exciting new film by Julie Davis titled “Finding Bliss.” I won’t give it away yet, but it’s a film that has made the festival circuit and may be coming to you in 2010.  A limited-release in L.A., Miami and NYC is planned with wide-release in the works. The star of “Finding Bliss” is Leelee Sobieski who had a baby girl this week with her fashion designer fiancé Adam Kimmel.

Sad news also in Hollywood Golden Globe winner Kate Hudson has apparently broken up with her Yankees boyfriend Alex Rodriguez and so has Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon with Jake Gyllenhaal.  Word is one in each relationship was looking for something more permanent.  Goodnight to my long time friend Oscar winning actress Jennifer Jones who passed away on Thursday, December 17, at the age of 90 at her beautiful home in Malibu. I met Jennifer through Anna Lee and she was always delightful.

On Sunday morning, actress Brittany Murphy, who starred in films such as "Clueless" and "Don's Say A Word" and who was reportedly fired from the film "Caller" for problematic behavior on the set died of an apparant heart attack.  Murphy was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her time of death was listed as 10:04 AM.  Murphy was 32 years old.

Here’s hoping that everyone has a safe and happy Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah. See you next week.
