BEVERLY HILLS—This week in Hollywoodland was both exciting and sad. Sad news came on Tuesday that former Tonight Show sidekick and Beverly Hills resident Ed McMahon died after a long illness. McMahon still is loved in this town and his recent legal and financial troubles were most likely caused by a man who had a good heart, who wanted to help others and overextended himself in doing so. Ed McMahon was 86.

Barbara Walters announced on "The View" that Sarah Jessica Parker and husband Matthew Broderick welcomed twin girls this week as well. Sarah’s been battling the tabloids and paparazzi to protect the surrogate mother who carried her twins. Word came out earlier in the week that police officers were possibly involved in invasion of privacy surrounding the surrogate who delivered the healthy babies. When will the media decide a story is just not worth wrecking lives of others or even causing danger or harm to the subjects? We are glad Sarah, the twins and the surrogate are all safe and healthy. Now let Sarah, Matthew and their son James enjoy some privacy.
Jon Gosselin announced that he and Kate of “Jon and Kate Plus 8” have decided to separate. Also during this time the TLC show will be on hiatus. TLC and Kate Gosselin are trying to decide where if anywhere this show can go from here. This is proof that children have no business being thrust into the limelight by parents who can’t seem to understand children are only young once. These children will now become an even greater focus for the media with their every move dissected and discussed instead of having their childhood intact. There are unseemly people in the public like stalkers and people with mental illness who can possibly put these children in jeopardy. Why would any parent do such a thing? Shame on you, Jon and Kate.
Farrah Fawcett passed away this week on Thursday morning. The beautiful actress who shot to fame in the late 1970s was battling cancer and had been staying at Ryan O'Neal's home in Malibu for the past several months. Farrah leaves behind her son Redmond O'Neal. Shortly after becoming a star on Aaron Spelling's "Charlie's Angels" the actress wanted to leave the show and be considered a serious actress. After award-winning performances in films like "The Burning Bed" she received the respect and admiration of her peers as well as fans. She'll be remembered as a woman who did things her own way but with respect and dignity. Farrah was 62.
In lieu of flowers, Ryan asked Canyon News to suggest readers who want to offer support, to send donations to support cancer research to: The Farrah Fawcett Foundation,P.O. Box 6478, Beverly Hills, CA 90212.
Whether Miley Cyrus admits she’s dating Nick Jonas again or not is old news. This week while performing a duet in Dallas, Texas, she offered Nick a kiss on the cheek after their performance of “Before the Storm,” which sent their fans into a frenzy. Miley was obviously sending a message to her fans that she and Nick are back together, just as we reported last week.
Sandra Bullock was not too excited about her latest film release. But “The Proposal” has landed on the number one box office spot this week and at a $34.1 million dollars weekend opening, this film is her biggest opening weekend in her career. The comedy which also stars Ryan Reynolds has Sandra playing a high powered executive who needs to marry her male assistant, Reynolds to stay in the U.S. It’s an over the top fun film for summer.
There must be something in the water in Hollywood. Actress Rachel Griffiths welcomes her third child with husband Andrew Taylor. Griffiths who stars in the ABC series “Brothers and Sisters” previously had two children. The little girl will join the family with siblings Banjo and Adelaide. And just when you thought it was safe to go surfing, actor Matthew McConaughey and girlfriend Camila Alves are expecting their second child. Baby Levi the couple’s son will turn a year old next month. McConaughey stated on his official Web site, "We have more blessed news to celebrate this Father's Day that [will] make this time next year double the fun. Levi is going to be a big brother...Yeah, we pulled off the greatest miracle in the world one more time, Camila and I are expecting our second child, bringing more life into the world, making more to live for. The future looks bright as the family grows.... just keep livin, Matthew and Camila."
With word that Jessica Simpson is about to create and star in a new reality series, we learn that Ryan Seacrest and Lindsay Lohan recently met to discuss their ideas for a “meaningful” reality show also. Ryan says that the show would be about second chances. It sounds like a great idea, but Lindsay belongs on the big screen. Her talents as an actress and her life itself are both too big to fit on the small screen. But mogul Seacrest may be the advisor or guidance that Lohan needs to revive her career. So this is a reality show I’m possibly going to watch.
Robert Pattinson is being followed throughout the city streets in New York City while filming “Remember Me.” The star of “Twilight” and the upcoming sequel “New Moon” is spending time with friends when not shooting but finding the hordes of fans to be a bit overwhelming to say the least. The actor recently told a publication that the energy that fans exert toward him is wonderful in many ways but can be “overwhelming at times.” Get used to it, Robert. When “New Moon” is released on November 20, he’s going to receive far more fan admiration for his powerful performance and a lot more media scrutiny on his love life.
Beautiful actress Stephanie Pratt deserves credit and praise for speaking out against eating disorders and explaining in great detail in US Weekly this week how she developed bulimia. The actress who is from one of the most respected family’s in this town has helped many thousand young girls and women by speaking out in such a forceful and honest manner about the disorder that is rampant not only in Hollywood but throughout the U.S. and around the world.
I received a call from friend Wanda N. Colon this week, the host of TLC’s "Home Made Simple," is also an actress and filmmaker. A short she produced and stars in called “Salt” will screen at the West Hollywood Film Festival August 5 through 8. "Salt" is a bitterly seasoned love story. Diego knew his wife Dani was a passionate woman but he never dreamed a little too much salt could turn deadly. With the arrival of a brown paper wrapped package, Dani’s mood has definitely darkened. Sipping wine and listening to Flamenco music has intensified the situation. As Diego returns home from work he knows something is up but he never guessed his wife would go this far. Salt is a dark comic look at love, passion, art and a condiment.
And by week's end word came that Michael Jackson who was renting a home in the Bel Air/Holmby Hills region of Los Angeles died from an apparent cardiac arrest. Michael is survived by three children: Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr., Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince "Blanket" Michael Jackson II. On Friday, June 26, I spoke with a Restaurateur in New Jersey, who had known Michael for twenty seven years. His two teenage sons had traveled with Jackson on tours in the 1990's, Mr. Dominic Cascio who owns il Michelangelo Restaurant in Boonton Township, NJ told me (Tommy Garrett) exclusively, "We loved Michael. He was a genius and a beautiful person. I've known Michael for twenty seven years and all I can say is he was not only a friend of ours, but he was part of our family. I don't know anyone as warm and caring as Michael Jackson and he will be missed. Michael was a real genuine person, who cared deeply for others. Our hearts are broken." Mr. Cascio added, "We pray for Michael's children."
