WASHINGTON, D.C.—The New World was discovered in 1492. During the next 100 years, tales of its natural wealth spread all through Europe. During the 16th century, the government of England sponsored the Church of England with very strict doctrines. Violators of church law were subjected to extreme punishment ranging from imprisonment, severing limbs and even death. It seems to be instinctive in all people that the world and all in it is the product of some all-powerful deity. Man seems to have a compelling urge to worship his creator in his own way. The desire for religious freedom became so strong, people were willing to risk their lives and cross the ocean to settle in America. In 1750 the population in America had increased to almost 1.2 million people. It was comprised of 360,000 slaves taken from Africa by English traders and sold in America. Troublemakers, thieves and undesirables were among the 757,000 English settlers. Included also were over 100,000 Germans and small numbers from France and the Netherlands.
To facilitate trade among themselves, the colonies developed their own paper currency called "Colonial Script." While the colonies prospered, England suffered in making payments on a debt of 140,000,000 pounds owed to the privately owned Bank of England.
In the last half of the 18th century, Amschel Meyer Baur was a banker in Frankfurt, Germany with five sons. He changed his name to "Rothschild." His sons opened banks in Vienna, London, Naples and Paris. In 1814, the Rothschild's acquired control of the Bank of England. The family was very interested in what was taking place in America.
