Thanksgiving Or Black Friday?

UNITED STATES—In less than two weeks, one of my favorite holidays will arrive.  That holiday would be Thanksgiving.  I love Thanksgiving because it allows me to spend quality time with my family.  Yes, the food is another reason.  How many times during the year can you get the okay to pig out on stuffing and sweet potato pie?  The thing about Thanksgiving is that it coincides with the biggest shopping day of the year, Black Friday.

Black Friday is the day that retailers have been waiting for all year.  It’s the day that those companies who are in the red see things go black in the books.  That single day alone can turn a massive profit for a company that is so close to closing its doors.  Black Friday is a tradition in our family; we’ve been doing it for years.   I like the idea of getting up at 2 or 3 a.m. to prepare for a huge day of buying Christmas gifts. 

 

I do not like the idea of not being able to spend time with my family because companies are choosing to open earlier and earlier each year. Just from a few peeks of the Black Friday ads that have already leaked, many stores are beginning to open their doors between 8 p.m. and 12 a.m.  It sucks for those employees who don’t get to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday because they have to head to work. 

 

I know the feeling; I have worked in retail, and the only day we’re closed is Christmas Day, but even on Thanksgiving, the company closes its doors early to allow employees to enjoy the Thanksgiving festivities with family. Most stores will likely be open Wednesday stocking shelves with Black Friday merchandise; so many still won’t enjoy the holiday as they should be able to do so.

 

The thing that some major companies fail to realize is that the consumer will still show up in droves if stores opened between 5 and 7 a.m. on Black Friday.  What we’re looking for are DEALS.  If you have excellent discounts on gadgets, clothing and general merchandise expect lines going out the door, which is what the retailer wants. 

 

My hope is that companies begin to have a change of heart and push back that excitement of Black Friday by not turning it into Black Thursday and eliminating the importance of the Thanksgiving holiday to allow families to bond and be thankful.
