The Crisis In Iraq

President Barack Obama is being urged by many to take action in Iraq.
UNITED STATES—Just when Americans thought the crisis in Iraq was over, a new crisis has emerged that is placing the American military in a tricky place.  If you haven’t seen the images or videos of the violent actions taking place in the country, be warned they are extremely frightening and horrific to look at.

It’s been close to two years since all American troops were evacuated from Iraq and it has placed President Obama and members of Congress to make a difficult decision. Should U.S. troops be sent back into combat in Iraq or should we just sit back and watch as this country tears itself apart?

It’s not an easy question to answer. I’ll be the first to admit I was not in favor of the country going to war in Iraq. I mean, we never found weapons of mass destruction that former President George W. Bush indicated were in the country. With every ounce of blood inside me, I supported our troops, but it’s still difficult to fathom the lives that were loss battling a war that was not America’s war to begin with.

My biggest concern is that America cannot just sit back and do nothing when this country is on the verge of a catastrophe. We have the resources to make adjustments and change the outlook of an already dire country, but should it be at the expense of our troops, our soldiers who have already sacrificed so much.

The country is asking for the U.S. military to implement air attacks to battle militants, which could send a strong message to those enacting anarchy: America will not sit and allow such atrocities to take place. President Obama did meet with congressional leaders on Wednesday to discuss the impending crisis, where Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell informed reporters, “We had a good discussion. The President basically just briefed us on the situation in Iraq and indicated he didn't feel he had any need for authority from us for the steps that he might take and indicated he would keep us posted."

I have a feeling that Congress and the President are concerned about Iraq, but not to point where they plan to take immediate action. It seems like a waiting game is taking place to see what precise action will be implemented before making any decisions that could impact America and Americans directly or indirectly. When it comes to war, casualties are always a possibility. That’s a scary factor in my opinion. I know its not America’s job to get involved in affairs that have nothing to do with our country, but will we sit back and allow innocent lives to be destroyed by those who use violence as a form of oppression to get what they want?

I agree no action should be taken without careful discussions with members of Congress and President Obama. I expect those who represent America to have more discussions on this issue, we have to take some sort of action, but we cannot sit around and just wait for things to get worse and worse. We are a country established on the notion of democracy, while we can’t force that onto others, we cannot sit and allow innocent people to lose their lives as a result of a militant group determined to advance their cause at all costs.
