Point of View
UNITED STATES—Music is so universal. It gravitates to cultures no matter what part of the world that you’re located in. 2012 was ruled by Psy and his inescapable dance craze “Gangnam Style.” Well 2013 has a new dance craze that is sweeping the nation “The Harlem Shake.” The thing about this dance craze is there are no lyrics to the song; it’s quite simply a great presence of musical instruments. Why is it that dance crazes sweep the nation?
To be honest I have no clue, but I don’t think there isn’t a celebrity or anyone in the public forum who hasn’t taken a shot at their own version of the hit song. High school students have posted videos to YouTube, some more shocking than others. Kids are catching on to the dance craze and celebs are posting videos all over the Internet with their own take.
The Backstreet Boys, Jimmy Fallon, The Miami Heat, The Michigan Wolverines, the cast of “Pretty Little Liars” are just a few of those who have dabbled with their own versions of the hit song. In an odd way, there really is no wrong way to tackle the dance; it’s whatever you choose to do, which is why I think the popularity has continued to grow in the recent months. Regardless of rather you are young or old; anyone can join in on the excitement. All you really need is a phone that captures video. You can perform the dance solo or with a group, I think the latter is more fun.
This sensation simply proves what I’ve suspected for years. If something is popular people enjoy mimicking the craze because it gives them an opportunity to be noticed and to become a member of an elite club. So if you’re haven’t picked up your camera, what are you waiting for, get in on the phenomenon.
