Why Do We Drink

UNITED STATES—When I became 21, the last thing on my mind was getting completely wasted. I have however, discovered something over the years. There are two types of drinkers: those that drink to socialize and those that drink to get drunk. The unfortunate side effect is more people I know are inclined to drink alcohol for the sole purpose of getting wasted; and what purpose does that solve in the long run?

You’re more likely to find yourself doing something so stupid you barely remember it the following day or you could end up in the slammer for disorderly conduct, or worse of all you get behind the wheel and start driving while heavily intoxicated. If I choose to drink, it’s for the purpose of socializing with others, but even in that case I sometimes choose not to drink.

A lot of people have the perception that you have to drink in order to have a good time, and I argue you really don’t. It’s possible to have a good time without getting completely drunk. If your goal is to have a good time, a good time can be had without having multiple shots, beers or glasses of wine. I think many young adults over indulge in alcohol because we’ve been prevented from drinking until a certain age. So when that opportunity presents itself to us, we get so hammered its not even funny.

I will admit I have had one night that I absolutely over indulged in alcohol; the next day was not a pretty site. I puked for hours, barely made it up the stairs to bed, I ruined a $200 jacket and I even washed my cell phone.  I swore to myself after that day to never drink to get drunk, what’s the purpose, I barely remember most of the things I did that night, and I hear I said some really stupid things that I am constantly reminded of during social gatherings with family.

Am I advocating for the alcohol age to be pushed beyond 21, no.  In my opinion, it would just drive those under the age to be inclined to find ways to get alcohol even more. There were rumblings some time ago about changing the age to 25, which isn’t that bad of an idea.  I think as a society we have to be more perceptive to the images depicted in the media and everyday life.  Just because we see someone we know doing it, does not make it acceptable for us to do the same. The things depicted on television are just as bad, “ Jersey Shore” has depicted countless episodes of cast members getting hammered at the club, some even spending a stint in the back of a patrol car.

Teens and some young adults are so easily coerced by what they see in their everyday lives and in the media, fighting peer pressure and temptation are difficult for them. As mature adults, it should be our mission to educate the younger generation about the dangers of alcohol. Its okay to have a drink or two during a social outing, but don’t overdo it. Know your limit and remember there is nothing fun about a drunken person, it’s embarrassing.
