Watch For Falling Rocks!
Posted by Kelly Carroll on Jun 10, 2007 - 5:29:00 PM

Note from Kelly Carroll:  Thanks so much for all the wonderful response to last week’s Spirit & Creativity - Celebrate Summer, Celebrate Life!  This week, guest author Denny Dwyer adds to the thought provoking summer fun – enjoy!  I’ll be back next week with more. KC.

A young fellow I once knew, call him Mack, was merrily driving himself to San Francisco and awaiting him was the promise of a new job, a new wife, and a new life.

Now Mack was excited with what future had in store; clearly, he had his intentions and game plan all set. Mack was intelligent, level-headed, and pretty much successful at getting what he set his mind on.

Everything was going well on his drive through the summer countryside of Northern California – nothing could stop him now for he was well-organized, capable and confident. It was right before lunch when it happened. Mack was coming around the bend of a steep grade and the mountainside, to his right, went almost straight up from the side of the road and extended along the road, which seemed like miles. And there it was, it was small, unimportant and innocuous really. A yellow sign at the edge of the road was warning everyone to Watch For Falling Rocks!

Naturally he slowed down, and at the same time, twisted his head in an attempt to look up through the windshield as far as he could. Not being able to see very well, he slowed the car to a stop. Getting out of the car, he walked to the side of the road and looked up. He didn’t see anything up there, so he looked to his imagination to consider how big and how many rocks there might be. Any size rock would hurl his car off the road and down the mountainside.

His imagination and memory of past disasters haunted him and filled him with dread and foreboding. “Why now? Why, when everything looks great for me, this has to happen?” He looked at the sign again. It wouldn’t be there if rocks didn’t fall all the time. What to do? Ignore the warning and take a chance? Wait until the danger passes and go on? When would they take down the sign?

Now my story might seem a little silly and farfetched. After all, you would never be derailed by such a sign in real life, huh? Take a look at your life for a moment. If my little story doesn’t apply to you, that’s great. But what about it? Anywhere in your life, you think you’re heading toward your desire, but some “warning” has been given in a trusting and reliable way? Although you still think you are on your journey, you are really staring at the warning sign or caught up in some action about the warning.

For example: a sixteen year old envisions himself 10 years from now, happily married with good kids, and employed as a leading architect in a major city bringing in more money then he needs. Things go well, but then he gets a warning: Watch for College Admission Requirements. Then another: Watch for Divorce. And yet another: Watch for Economic Recession. And still another: Watch for Political Backstabbing at Work. And of course, the number of yellow warning signs at the edge of his intended path will never cease to show up. And they will never go away.

What to do? How can you seriously ignore such serious signs of warning? After all, the warnings are real; are they not? People have been known to be caught or “avalanched by falling rocks” and all their dreams and hopes dashed away, haven’t they?

An interesting thing though, is that with all of the warning signs available to worry about each person selects only a few to actually worry about. The ones they don’t select are out of their view and out of their world.

So what is real? Only things that you "realize," things you make real. So, make the things you want be real. Put up your own “warning” signs: Watch for Riches, Watch for True Love, or Watch for Happiness. These are just a few. Make up your own and make them real. If you have the power to select what is in your world, select something fun.
