After a valiant effort in the second half to get their second win of the season, the Bruin football team was not able to pull it off against the Bulldogs of Fresno State on September 27.

   The game started off with a bang for the Bruins after wide receiver Terrance Austin took the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, but their exuberance was short lived after the play was called back for holding. From that point the game went back and forth with the Bruins offense rebounding from their stagnate performances against Arizona and BYU, fighting hard to get the team to 2-2.

  Most of the offense spark came from the return of senior running back Kahil Bell, who has been out of action since the Tennessee game because of a sprained ankle. Bell ran for 73 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, and was complemented by the hard, downhill running of freshman Derrick Coleman.

   At halftime the Bruins were only down by one point with the score 20-19, and looked to continue their offensive success in the second half, but in the third quarter it was the Bulldogs, not the Bruins, who continued their offensive surge.

   Fresno State quarterback Tom Brandstater lead the Dogs to two touchdown drives and a field in the third quarter, while the Bruins were only able to squeeze out a field goal and two points from senior safety Brett Lockett after he picked up a blocked PAT. Entering the third quarter down 36-22, the Bruins got a quick score when Kevin Craft hooked up with junior fullback Chane Moline for a 20-yard touchdown to cut the Bulldogs lead to five points. The Bruins offense got the ball back to take the lead until freshman running back Derrick Coleman fumbled and it was recovered by Fresno State.

   Despite the loss, the Bruins made a lot of improvements in their offense and special teams, with Terrance Austin setting a school record for all-purpose yards with 298 yards. The Bruins look to carry this improvement into their second Pac-10 game against Washington State, who is 1-4 and winless in the Pac-10 so far.

   "Looking forward to playing hard and just going out there and playing ball and flying around and having fun," said redshirt sophomore defensive end Reggie Stokes.

   The women's golf team won their second title of the season, winning the Mason Rudolph Championship by six strokes. They were led by the solid play of junior Syndee Michaels, who also won individual honors in the tournament.

   "Today was a great win for our team," said Head Coach Carrie Forsyt. "It was made even more special by an individual victory for Sydnee. She has worked hard to get her game to the next level. All of our players are dedicated and share a vision for our team this season. It's exciting to start off the year like this."

   On October 17, in the Stanford Intercollegiate Tournament, the women look to continue their win streak and make it three straight wins to start the season.

   In a rematch of the 2006 NCAA championship game, the men's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie with the University of California Santa Barbara. After scoring two goals in the second half to take the lead after being down 2-1, UCSB scored a goal in the 78th minute of the match to tie it up. The previous match also ended with a 2-2 tie against Cal State Fullerton, with the tying goals coming in the last 20 minutes of the match.

Note: Former Bruin great Milt Davis died of cancer on September 29. He was a standout for the Bruin football team at defensive back and went on to play in the NFL for the Lions and the Colts. Davis was an All-Pro defensive back in the league and led the NFL in interceptions twice in his career.
