Keeping It Bruin: A Look Into UCLA Athletes

The Olympics trial have come and gone, but not without a few Bruins making sure they punched their ticket to Beijing.
There were 19 Bruin alums that competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials and 15 current Bruins that competed. Sadly none of the current Bruins were able to make their way to Beijing, but 7 of the 19 alums were able to secure their spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
Suzy Roos and Sheena Johnson were the first two alums that made the Olympic team. Roos finished second in the women's discus finals and Johnson third in the women's 400m hurdles. The rest of the Bruin alums on the U.S. Olympic team include Monique Henderson in the 4x400m, Amy Acuff in the high jump, Dawn Harper in the 110m hurdles, UCLA women's throwing coach Jessica Cosby in the hammer throw, former four-time All-American Elaine Youngs in beach volleyball, and volunteer UCLA women's swimming coach Kim Vandeberg. UCLA's own Jeanette Bolden, women's head track and field coach, is also part of the Olympic team as the head track and field coach for the women.
The Bruins date with Tennessee looms closer and closer, and the football team is doing everything it can to prepare for the big game. On the June 24, the Bruins began six weeks of voluntary training to get themselves ready for training camp and clash with the volunteers. The Bruins are now entering their fourth week of training and are looking forward to putting their training to good use on the field.
"We've been pushing ourselves to our limits," said linebacker Frank Guzman, "We are all working hard to reach our goals and try to prove everybody wrong. There are a lot of expectations this year and we feel like we are a team to be reckoned with."
The Bruins begin training camp on August 5, and their path to what looks to be an exciting season.
Note: UCLA's Jackie Robinson was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame and Sue Enquist, former UCLA women's softball coach, was inducted into the International Women's Sports Hall.
