BEVERLY HILLS—Southern California’s top 10 sports moments of 2007 were announced last Sunday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The Los Angeles Sports Council held its 3rd annual L.A. Sports Awards where the top 10 moments, as well as leading sports men, women, and executives are honored.
The Anaheim Duck’s first Stanley cup win was given the number one position. Formed only 14 years ago, the Ducks earned Hockey’s most coveted trophy this June after a 6-2 victory against Ottawa at Anaheim’s Honda Center. In another category, Duck’s general manager, Brian Burke, was awarded “Sports Executive of the Year.”
The top 10 list continued with the introduction of British soccer sensation, David Beckham as midfielder to the Los Angeles Galaxy. Unlike any other player, Beckham has created a surge in attendance and media coverage of the team. In addition to being a part of the top 10 sports moments, Beckham was awarded “Sportsman of the Year.”
“Sportswoman of the Year” was awarded to track star Allyson Felix, who competed in the 2007 World Track and Field Championship in Osaka. There, Felix won three gold medals, including the 4x100 and 4x400 relays with the U.S. team.
The top 10 events and subcategories were selected by a panel of local print and electronic media personas and can be viewed in full on the council’s website, www.lasports.org along with those events that were nominated but not selected. Fans themselves were asked to help choose the honorary events for each team through online voting.
The L.A. Sports Council is a privately funded organization that hosts this awards show each year. They recognize accomplishments in Southern California’s professional as well as collegiate sports. The funds raised by this event are used to attract major sports events to the Los Angeles area as well as to support Southern California’s sports teams.
