Awards Season In Full Swing!
Posted by Rose Quintiliano on Jan 13, 2014 - 11:55:05 AM

HOLLYWOOD—One of the first events of the awards season took place at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala on January 4 in Palm Springs, California. Some Hollywood heavyweights were there including Sandra Bullock, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Jane Fonda and Tom Hanks among many more. The event celebrated its 25th year, but it's only been in the last few years that it has become a star-studded stop on the awards circuit.

Sandra Bullock is nominated for Screen Actors Guild and a Golden Globe award for her brilliant performance as an astronaut in the film, "Gravity.” This ceremony was not televised allowing for the acceptance speeches to be somewhat lengthy, while lessening the pressure of millions watching. Meryl Streep, who stars with Julia Roberts in the Oscar-tipped movie, “August: Osage County” is up for a Globe and SAG honor, was given the festival's icon award.

Hollywood heavyweights reunited at the Golden Globes on Sunday, January 12 in Beverly Hills and the SAG Awards the following weekend. The Golden Globes was hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. The HFPA loves attractive starlets, movie stars transitioning to television or new shows that the Golden Globes can give their stamp of approval. The HFPA also likes cable dramedies about women of a certain age and they love inside-Hollywood stories. The interesting award to look out for was the best series drama award, which went to "Breaking Bad.” In the actor in a series, comedy or musical nod, it was a surprise to see Andy Samberg "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," take the top prize over Robin Williams. The members of the HFPA are like trendsetters, they love to nominate splashy, high-rated dramas.

The 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) will take place on Saturday, January 18, on TBS and TNT. It will be interesting to see how "12 Years a Slave," will do with four nods, while "Breaking Bad," leads television with four as well. Rita Moreno will be honored with the lifetime achievement award while the top contenders of the evening are Jennifer Lawrence, Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep. We are all expecting "30 Rock," and "Breaking Bad," to do well.

The Grammy Awards will take place on Sunday, January 26 on CBS. The ceremony is celebrating its 56th year and has become the most prestigious awards in the music industry for all genres. LL Cool J returns as the host. Expect big surprises this year as Imagine Dragons to Pink to Kendrick Lamar will take the stage. It also marks Daft Punk's first televised performance since 2008.  The 2014 awards season is slightly altered this year to make room for the airing of the Winter Olympics. Notice that the Grammys for the last few years have always been in February.

It's always fun to see who wins, many songs are about real people, although most of the public never knows exactly who. Taylor Swift quickly caught on in her career. In the 50s, 60s,70s, 80s artist were notorious for writing hits about people they knew, from the Beatles hit "Hey Jude," which was about Lennon's son Julian and the bitter divorce they were going through with his first wife Cynthia, to "Cathy's Clown," the Everly Brothers #1 hit in 1960. Cathy was Don Everly's high school girlfriend in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Rose’s Scoop: His brother Phil Everly, who with Don, made up the revered famous group the Everly Brothers died last week at the age of 74.  He passed away in the Los Angeles suburb of Burbank following complications from chronic pulmonary disease, his wife Patti, told the Los Angeles Times. The Everly Brothers, with their close-harmony singing had 19 top 40 hits in their heyday between 1957 and 1962. Their famous songs included "Bye, Bye Love," "Wake Up Little Susie," "All I Have To Do is Dream," and "Cathy's Clown." Phil Everly was the uncle of Erin Everly who was once married to Axl Rose of Guns N Roses. In soccer news, the world mourns the death of Eusebio, the Portuguese soccer star who died January 5, in Lisbon, Portugal.
