HOLLYWOOD—One way of striking it rich, is to make a low budget horror film and have it become successful. It takes a bit of luck, and depending on the film’s distribution, it may get noticed by a producer with very deep pockets and powerful contacts in Hollywood.
The weekend of October 25, proved that moviegoers are open-minded to low-budget movies. “Paranormal Activity” grabbed the No. 1 spot with $22 million, according to Hollywood.com. The fictional movie, was shot like a homemade documentary, it follows a carefree couple Katie and Micah coping with apparitions and supernatural phenomena in their home. They decide to investigate the escalating intrusions by setting up a video camera to capture evidence of the demonic presence in their house, and what unfolds is more than they ever imagined. Word of mouth is still the best form of marketing movies, and attributes its success. The film was reportedly shot for $15,000, by unknowns and proves that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a moneymaker.
Speaking of films, a new thriller titled “Unknown White Male” will begin shooting in Berlin next January. According to Variety, Diane Kruger will join Liam Neeson in a film that centers on a man (Neeson) who awakens from a coma to find that someone else has assumed his identity. However, when no one, including his wife (January Jones), believes him, he enlists the help of a young woman to prove who he really is. Diane Kruger was last seen in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds.”
Angelina Jolie, who has been seen wearing the same black, flowy, maxi dress repeatedly, is in talks to star in Ridley Scott’s new drama set around the Gucci fashion dynasty. The 34-year-old Jolie would play the real-life femme fatale Patrizia Gucci, who was sentenced to 29 years in jail for plotting the murder of her ex, Maurizio Gucci. The film, tentatively titled “Gucci,” would be set at the height of their success in the 1970s and ‘80s, when they were selling millions annually. Variety reports that a script is still being polished and Scott is in talks to lure Leonardo DiCaprio to appear alongside Jolie. A tentative start date is scheduled for 2010.
Is Hollywood responsible for violence against women by portraying them as weak sex objects? Actress Nicole Kidman testified last week before a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee in Washington and is considering legislation to address violence against women overseas through humanitarian relief efforts and grants to local organizations working on the problem. Kidman is a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Development Fund for Women, known as UNIFEM.
Anne Hathaway is Rio bound, and lending her voice to the new animated movie “Rio.” The film follows the adventures of a macaw that escapes his cage from a small town in Minnesota and heads for the Summer Olympic city of Rio de Janeiro. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film will be in 3D digital animation and is scheduled for release on April, 8, 2011.
