LONG BEACH—A man convicted of beating his girlfriend’s toddler son to death was sentenced on May 4 to 31 years to life in state prison, according to a press release.
Hector Ernest Jr., 27, was convicted on April 12 of one count of assault on a child under eight causing death and one count of felony child abuse, according to Deputy District Attorney Amy Wilton. After almost two days of deliberating, jurors in the case found Ernest not guilty of murder.

However, on May 4, two prior convictions for Ernest were found true by Long Beach Superior Court Judge Joan Comparet-Cassani. One conviction occurred in 2009 for carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle, and another in 2007 for possession of concentrated cannabis.
Ernest was charged with the death of 2-year-old Deandre Green, who was killed on March 20, 2010, “as a result of blunt force trauma to the abdomen,” the press release states.
Cameo Green, the 23-year-old mother of the deceased boy, was charged with one count of felony child abuse with an allegation that, under the circumstances of the tragedy, she “willfully caused and permitted the child to be harmed,” which ultimately resulted in his death.
Green pleaded guilty to the charge and admitted to the allegation on March 11, 2011. She was sentenced to six years in state prison.
Green was the boy’s biological mother and Ernest was her boyfriend. The boy lived with the couple in their Long Beach home.
Both Ernest and Green were originally held on $1 million bail after the felony complaint for an arrest warrant was filed on April 15, 2010.
Long Beach Police Department officers handled the investigation in this case.
