BRENTWOOD—Former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger admitted to his wife on May 16 that he fathered a child more than 10 years ago with a household staffer.

Schwarzenegger, who recently announced his separation from wife Maria Shriver on May 9, told the public in a statement that he had fathered a child over a decade ago with a household staff member, whose identity has not been released, who worked and lived with the family for 20 years.

When the staff member retired, she reportedly left the Schwarzenegger family’s home voluntarily and on good terms, in addition to receiving a severance payment. She was married when she first became pregnant, and allegedly claimed her husband was the baby’s father.

The former governor first told his wife about his illegitimate child in January, after leaving office as governor. Schwarzenegger has apologized to the public, issuing a statement to the Los Angeles Times stating, “I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family,” and said, “There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.”

Additionally, Shriver tweeted on May 13, “Thank you for all the kindness, support and compassion. I am humbled by the love. Thank you.”

When Schwarzenegger became California Governor in 2003, Shriver left her job as a correspondent for NBC in order to remove herself from political bias and maintain her journalistic integrity. When Schwarzenegger left office in January, he announced that he would return to making films, but Shriver has not told the public what she plans to do next in her career.

Schwarzenegger and Shriver announced their separation last week after 25 years of marriage.
