The Rising Costs of Reflexology

TOKYO, JAPAN – A 35-year old woman in central Tokyo received quite an expensive massage early in May – to the total tune of 1,190,000 yen (just over $10,500 USD). A massage that good should be simply illegal…and as a matter of fact, this was.

29-year-old South Korean burglar Lee Jin-se got the woman warmed up by breaking and entering her apartment, then tying her up. After he took his ‘initial deposit’ of 210,000 yen in cash, and her bank card, he put the moves on her by giving her a massage that lasted for several hours.

Apparently, he did not physically or sexually assault her, but he did want to “relax her,” since, of course, a burglary is a rather stressful experience. Just why he stuck around is uncertain, but police speculate that he wanted to stay there until the bank cash machines opened in the morning, since few ATM machines in Japan are open 24 hours.

Family Friendly Tattoos

DYERSVILLE, IOWA – Inking a lover’s name on your skin is one of the big ‘no-no’s of common tattoo practice. There is, however, nothing in the books about getting a tattoo of an advance directive.

For the non-medical laypeople (and those unfamiliar with Terri Schiavo), an individual’s advanced directive or ‘living will’ is a document that specifies certain medical decisions in advance, usually including whether or not the person: a) wants to remain on life support, and b) wishes to be resuscitated.

To supplement the legal document rigmarole, 80-year old retired nurse Mary Wohlford indelibly marked “Do Not Resuscitate” on her chest. Wohlford carried out this stunt with her typical audacious aplomb, not only talking the reluctant bunch at Gary's Professional Tattooing Studio into inking the tattoo, but also scoring a Senior Citizen discount.

The tattoo alone is not likely to be officially binding, but for Wohlford, the additional reassurance is quite likely priceless.

Telephonic Madness

DOHA, QATAR – Vanity telephone numbers see an all time high in Doha, capital of Qatar, during a charity auction hosted by Qatar Telecom. The number in question is none other than mobile telephone number 666-6666, which garnered a clean 10 million riyals ($2.75 million USD).

Don’t see evil ‘signs’ in the sale, though, while triple-sixes mean many things to different people, certain interpretations see this as a holy number, representing the six directions – north, south, east, west, up, and down.

Another special number was responsible for the previous ‘most expensive telephone number’ record: 888-8888, purchased by Sichuan Airlines for $500,000 USD. “8” in Cantonese (pronounced ‘baht’) is a lucky number, and sounds much like the Cantonese word for ‘rich’ or ‘prosperous.’

Prior to breaking the phone number record, Qatar, a small peninsula branching off of Saudia Arabia, had been best known for having a quite a large supply of natural gas and oil, giving its residents among the highest per capita incomes worldwide.
