UNITED STATES—There are lots of fruits out there for Americans to consume on a daily basis. One fruit that has become a staple in many homes is the pineapple. It’s important to note that the pineapple is a tropical fruit. Some may be surprised that Europeans are responsible for the fruit’s unique name when they discovered it back in the 1600s. The clever name was coined as it reminded the Europeans of pine cones.
Looking at the fruit may give the impression that it’s not easy to dismantle, but it is. The one thing to remember about the pineapple is the color, the husk and the outer skin is important for choosing a ripe piece. There is nothing worse then picking a pineapple that is not ripe or juicy. On the nutritional side of things, the fruit is an abundant source of manganese and Vitamin C. Pineapples also contain an abundant source of potassium for the body. It contains the enzyme, bromelain, which helps break down proteins for the body.
The most important thing to know about pineapples is steer clear of the core. Yes, there is a circular core in the middle of all pineapples that are not wise to eat. You may be tempted to nibble on it, but don’t. The core can cause a mild burning sensation on the mouth. The fruit is a staple for many fruit salads and is known to be used in yogurts and other satisfying deserts. I will admit a canned pineapple has no comparison to the fresh fruit itself. There is a completely authentic taste with a fresh pineapple that you will not receive with a canned fruit.
The juice from a pineapple is commonly used in a drink known as a Piña Colada. It’s a mix of pineapple juice and coconut that is quite tasty to say the least. Some mix in alcohol for the drink, but if you want to make it kid friendly, just omit it. To make a mean Piña Colada take some chunks of pineapple, pineapple juice, coconut water or shredded coconut, ice and a banana. Bam, you have a tantalizing drink that is healthy and tasty at the same time.
