Strawberry, You Are So Sweet!
Posted by LaDale Anderson on Jan 23, 2013 - 3:27:25 PM

UNITED STATES—Let’s talk about some sweet fruits.  When it comes to having a fruit that is sweet, but not overly sweet nothing beats the strawberry.  While many will disagree with my claim, the sweetness of a strawberry depends on the ripeness of the fruit.  Timing is a crucial element when picking the fruit; the darker the berry the better the taste in my opinion.

Strawberries have been around since the dawn of the century, but popularity for the fruit really thrived in the 17th century.  To describe the shape of the fruit is difficult; take a look at a waffle ice cream cone and you’ll have an idea of what a strawberry looks like. You’ll know a strawberry when you see it because of the green stem that pops out from the top. Be sure to cut that before you bite into the ripe piece of fruit.

Just why is the strawberry good for you?  It’s a natural sugar, and its okay to eat natural sugars, it’s the added sugars to products that are not good for the body.  In addition, it contains loads of Vitamin C which is good for fighting off viruses and keeping you healthy.  It also contains loads of amino acids good for breaking down proteins for the body to absorb, as well as calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron, all vital minerals good for the body.

It’s also a versatile fruit that can be used in many dishes.  Some may used the strawberry as vinaigrette; it can be used in desserts like pies, cakes, ice cream or as a garnish for salads.  Notably it’s a staple for fruit smoothies.  Strawberries similar to bananas are used in smoothies for their ability to thicken the drink; it doesn’t hurt that the berry provides that vibrant red color either. Those pesky seeds can be a deterrent to some, but trust me they won’t hurt your body if you digest them.  For a sweet treat that won’t harm the body, no fruit beats the strawberry its one in a million!
