The Banana, A Fruit That Gets No Recognition
Posted by LaDale Anderson on Feb 6, 2013 - 11:05:43 AM

UNITED STATES—Why are bananas that one staple fruit that happens to be in everyone’s kitchen no matter what?  What is it about the banana that children literally run away from this tasty fruit?  It could be because while it’s a fruit not too many people consider it to be sweet for the tasting.  What a lot of people fail to realize is that bananas contain a vital nutrient that is beneficial to your body: potassium.  Yes, that’s right the boomerang shaped fruit is loaded with potassium which is good for the body to maintain its electrolyte balance.

The banana contains a ripening agent known as ethylene that speeds up the ripening process.  They also produce carbon dioxide.  If you ever purchase over-ripe bananas place them in a brown paper bag with a tomato or apple to quicken the process. Bananas are a good source of carbohydrates, but be sure not to overindulge if you’re not planning to burn those carbs.  In addition, they have a generous dose of magnesium and phosphorous in addition to potassium.

The pesky problem with bananas is the fruit does not have a long shelf life.  You want to purchase a bunch when the fruit is ripe.  In other words, there should be some green, but you want shades of yellow in there as well.  If you purchase a bunch of green bananas there’s no way you can eat them as they’re too starchy for the body, on top of that you’ll have trouble removing the husk as well.

Bananas on average may last about 4-5 days if you get them while ripe.  NEVER PLACE IN THE FRIGDE!  It’s best to keep them on the counter at room temperature.  They are the perfect snack in the morning or after a tough workout, but more importantly it’s versatile.  It can be used with cereal, granola, yogurt, oatmeal, banana pudding, cakes, but most importantly it’s a must for any fruit smoothie.

The banana is the body of the smoothie, for most only one banana is used, but if multiple ingredients are being used throw in another banana to thicken the body of the smoothie.
