“All My Children” and “OLTL” Returning?
Posted by LaDale Anderson on Dec 19, 2012 - 8:46:38 PM

HOLLYWOOD—The soap arena is on its last footing.  Only four soaps remain on the air, “The Young and the Restless,” “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Days of our Lives” and “General Hospital.”  For those keeping score two of those soaps air on CBS: “Y&R” and “B&B,” while “Days” airs on NBC and “GH” is on ABC.  News arose this week that two dearly departed soaps from ABC may be getting a revival.  Those soaps are “All My Children” and “One Life to Live.”

That’s right soap lovers some of your favorites could be making a return, only this time hitting the Internet waves.  But look at it this way, its better to have the soaps then to not have the soaps at all.  “All My Children” exited the canvas back in September 2011, while “One Life to Live” followed closely behind in January 2012.  The biggest issue with those soaps failing is the lack of viewers who had slowly been tuning out over the years.  I will admit “OLTL” was absolutely heading in the right direction, and “AMC” was definitely getting on its feet with the huge cliffhanger ending.

Prospect Park the company that jumped into action in an attempt to resurrect the soaps after hearing of their departure last year, announced news this week that both melodramas could return in 2013.  The company has inked deals with SAG-AFTRA and the DGA that could bring those soaps back.  It’s no secret that some of the stars from those shows have already found homes on other soaps still airing.  For starters several cast members of “OLTL” have found themselves a permanent home on “ General Hospital.”  Those stars include Michael Easton (John McBain), Kristen Alderson (Starr Manning) and Roger Howarth (Todd Manning).  Even stars Kassie DePaiva (Blair) and Florencia Lozano (Tea) have made appearances on the show during sweeps months.

If an attractive deal is reached with actors from those shows I do not see the soaps having a difficult time getting the fan base back.  There are die-hards out there that adored both soaps and would love to see them return.  It’s quite different watching the series online compared to the small screen, but if the drama is there people will tune in.  For starters, “All My Children” did conclude with one hell of a cliffhanger with JR (Jacob Young) getting drunk and firing a shot into a room of unsuspecting Pine Valley citizens.  Just who he shot has never been revealed, but this could be perfect timing to lure people back in.

The same can be said for “One Life to Live” which for the most part concluded on a happy note.  However, for Todd (Howarth) not so much, as he was carted off to jail for the murder of his twin brother, who surprise happened to be alive and ticking at the hands of crazed lunatic Alison Perkins.  It would be hard to watch “OLTL” without its resident baddie Mr. Manning who has brought his reign of terror to Port Charles.

Whether negotiations with Prospect Park and the actors and actresses from those soaps reach a tentative deal is still up in the air, but I am certain there are quite a few soap lovers out there waiting for the return of these fan favorites that literally shaped the soap arena as we know it. Fingers crossed!
