'Dexter's' 'Smokey And The Bandit' Was Great
Posted by Contributor on Oct 17, 2011 - 8:07:42 PM

HOLLYWOOD—Last night’s third episode of season six of “Dexter” was titled “Smokey and the Bandit.” Dexter managed to find a serial killer from his childhood called the Tooth Fairy, and Deb’s personal and professional life has begun to spin out of control. Dexter’s relationship with Harrison has become center stage, as he fears his life and choices may catch up with him and ultimately destroy his son as well.

As the excited episode started, the Miami PD found a woman’s body. Travis, played by Colin Hanks is being brainwashed by a mentor, played by Edward James Olmos (Professor Gellar), who has a wickedly religious bent, that has placed a lot of people in mortal danger. The duo-serial killers have kidnapped a man, who is begging for his life. But Olmos’s character has no mercy. While on the other side of town, Dexter found a serial killer that he had idolized as a kid. But Dexter initially wasn’t certain if the older man was a copycat or the real thing. Soon he figures out that he’s found the real man, when he breaks into a storage locker and finds the teeth the killer extracted from his victims in a box, similar to the box of blood samples Dexter keeps from his own victims.

While Debra continued to try to acclimate to her new position as a lieutenant with Miami homicide, her supervisor LaGuerta attempts to make her life hell. LaGuerta takes Quinn’s side against Deb during a meeting and it’s just the beginning. Angel warned Deb that his ex-wife Maria LaGuerta is out to get her. Deb vented to her brother Dexter, who was preoccupied with hunting down the serial killer from his past.

The episode was so well written, that every storyline weaved from one to the other effortlessly and with great excitement. Quinn’s anger at Deb for not accepting his engagement has already turned into another love interest for him. And the office intern may be using her feminine wilds on the male team, but she has a very sick and horrific secret. Viewers got a clue when they saw her placing a severed hand in her purse just before leaving for the day.

A new detective from a big city showed up and immediately offended Debra, by telling her to get him some coffee and tell the lieutenant he was there to meet with him. Deb quickly explained that she is his boss, not the office secretary.

Just as Dexter got his car back from Brother Sam, he was kidnapped at gunpoint by the Tooth Fairy, who figured out that Dexter was on to him. As he forced Dexter to drive to a location so he could murder Dexter, in a twist, Dex rammed his car into a pole and managed to get control over his elderly counterpart, then took him back to his own senior citizen apartment complex to kill him. Instead of stabbing the Tooth Fairy in the heart, Dexter decided to smother him with a pillow in order to keep the crime scene clean, and also to be able to report him as having a heart attack instead. The Tooth Fairy’s final words were to make sure his son knew who he really was. Dexter chose not to give him his final wish.

The final moments were chilling. Viewers witnessed Dexter putting his son, Harrison to sleep before getting ready to file away Walter’s blood sample. When he goes to put the blood sample slides away, he dropped the box, shattering several of the samples and losing the location of each one. The samples are now unknown. We also witnessed the revelation of the latest killing by Travis and Gellar. Body parts attached to mannequins riding in on horseback was the nightmarish sight that tourists and citizens on the streets of Miami witnessed, as they looked on in horror and the final scene ended.

Viewers were shocked but equally as entertained. Alabama viewer Bobby said, “As Deb’s job troubles mount, her brother Dexter makes a startling discovery. A serial killer from his teen years, has resurfaced in Miami, and Dexter must find him. Meanwhile, the evil duo [Gellar and Travis] that will play a big part in Dexter’s life, has added another victim, and Brother Sam has asked Dexter to attend his church services at the beach. Next week’s show promises every more explosive happenings to prove that ‘Dexter’ is one of the best dramas on television.”

Dexter airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. exclusively on Showtime.
