"Glee" Recap: 'Britney 2.0'
Posted by Ivetta Babadjanian on Sep 20, 2012 - 10:19:08 PM

HOLLYWOOD—Dedicating one "Glee" episode to pop star Britney Spears was just not enough! Check out the latest episode, 'Britney 2.0.' The choice to have another Britney episode is a direct result of Spears being named the newest judge on "The X Factor," which also airs on FOX.

The glee girls perform "Womanizer."

The episode mainly revolves around Brittany (Heather Morris), who is repeating her senior year and struggling as she misses her girlfriend, Santana (Naya Rivera), who is in college on a cheer leading scholarship. She performs the song "Hold It Against Me" with her fellow Cheerios. The number has great choreography and she ends it with the famous line, "It's Britney, Bitch."

Brittany is then confronted by Coach Sylvester (Jane Lynch), who tells her that her low GPA sets a bad example for her fellow cheerleaders and she needs to get her grades up. Until then, she is kicked off the team as head cheerleader and newcomer Kitty (Becca Tobin) will take her place.

Brittany goes on a downward spiral, making Mr. Schuester (Mathew Morrison) and Ms. Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) worry about her. They decide to bring back the Britney Spears theme to glee club, since that was when she truly shined. So when Mr. Schuester enters the choir room, he announces that Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) wants them to perform a Britney song for a school assembly.

Blaine (Darren Criss) and Artie (Kevin McHale) proceed to sing a mash-up of Britney's song "Boys" and Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend." The songs complimented each other nicely. However, even when some of the glee members performed the song "3", Brittany remained unimpressed and continued to eat various junk food products.

Brittany's breakdown, very similar to the pop star's scandalous behavior back in the day, continues as she almost shaves her head and lip syncs during the assembly performance. After being booed offstage, Sam (Chord Overstreet) realizes that Brittany was acting crazy in order to hit rock bottom like her idol and then rise from the ashes.

As the drama with Brittany continues, new characters Marley (Melissa Benoist) and Jake (Jacob Artist) develop an attraction towards each other. Despite realizing that he's a ladies' man, and singing "Womanizer" to him, Marley is growing more fond of Puck's (Mark Sailing) bad boy half-brother. They sing a great mash-up of "You Drive Me (Crazy)" and Aerosmith's "Crazy." They flirt throughout the performance and he ends up giving her his leather jacket. Although it seems inevitable they will end up together, writers throw in a curve ball when audience's find out he is dating cheerleader Kitty, which leaves Marley crestfallen as she sings the ballad "Everytime."

Back in New York, Rachel (Lea Michele) continues to battle it out with her NYADA teacher, Cassandra July (Kate Hudson). Kurt (Chris Colfer), her best friend and new roommate, tells her that July was a former Broadway star who became a train wreck after a video of her breaking an audience member's cellphone went viral. Rachel uses that fact against her teacher after she tried to prove that she could in fact be sexy by performing a steamy dance routine to "Oops I Did It Again."

It's later revealed that her dance teacher isn't as cold-hearted as Rachel once thought, and she uses harsh criticism to teach her students what life is like on Broadway. Although things are semi-resolved with her teacher, Rachel continues to be conflicted as her boyfriend, Finn (Corey Moteith), is trying to keep his distance while her new attractive friend, Brody (Dean Geyer), keeps hitting on her.

Overall, the greatest performances of the night were the ones that were either mash-ups or performed in a different way than the original. The last Britney episode had a lot more high points. 'Britney 2.0' seemed to criticize the singer and remind us of how crazy she used to be instead of promoting her.
