HOLLYWOOD—When "Glee" titled the latest episode, "The Break-Up," it made it quite obvious that tears and heartbreak would be involved. However, it failed to prepare fans for all the emotional scenes as so many of our favorite couples call it quits.
Blaine (Darren Criss) sings an emotional rendition of "Teenage Dream."
The episode begins on an awkward note on the morning after Finn (Corey Monteith) makes an impromptu visit to Rachel (Lea Michele) while she had Brody (Dean Geyer) over. Finn then reveals that he was in the army for only 16 days as he accidentally shot himself in the leg and was released with an honorary discharge. He says the reason he shied away from her calls was because he felt ashamed that his aspirations had once again led him nowhere.
Blaine (Darren Criss) is also feeling hurt as Kurt (Chris Colfer) is always busy with work and never makes time to talk with him. As Finn follows Rachel around NYADA and realizes how truly lost he is, the two disheartened boys pour their emotions out in the song "Barely Breathing" by Duncan Sheik.
Another unsuspected visitor arrives in New York when Blaine can't take the long distance anymore and makes the long trek from Ohio to see his boyfriend. Rachel and Kurt decide to take their boyfriends to a popular bar amongst NYADA students where they come across Brody. Finn doesn't feel comfortable going on stage with Rachel so he urges her to sing "Give Your Heart A Break" by Demi Lovato with Brody. Finn watches in distaste as the chemistry between the two is unmistakable.
Blaine has been sulking all night as well and performs a heartbreaking version of Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" with only piano accompaniment. This performance can only be described as hauntingly beautiful. Criss is able to strip down a simple pop song and put so much emotion behind every note. Soon after, Blaine admits he cheated on Kurt by hooking up with a random boy when he was incredibly lonely and unhappy. Nearby, Rachel tells Finn about the kiss she shared with Brody. The result? The four begin to sing No Doubt's "Don't Speak," the ultimate break-up song, making it impossible to watch the scene without tear-filled eyes.
Finn leaves New York the next day without talking to Rachel and goes back to Ohio to visit Mr. Schuester (Mathew Morrison) at McKinley High. After breaking down in his favorite teacher's arms, Finn visits the new glee students and suggests they perform the musical "Grease."
Tension is created between Mr. Schuester and Ms. Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) when he is accepted to be a part of the blue ribbon panel and needs to go to Washington D.C. for three months. Mr. Schuester is upset when she refuses to go with him while she becomes enraged that he expects her to drop everything for him.
"Glee" writers were not satisfied with three fractured relationships in their midst and brought on Santana (Naya Rivera) and Brittany (Heather Morris) along for the ride. Brittany explains to Santana that she felt abandoned after she left for college and her visits are less than frequent. Santana uses Taylor Swift's song, "Mine," to articulate just how much she loves Brittany. Her rendition of the song surpassed the original as it was raw and full of passion. Although the two love each other very much, Santana decides the two should temporarily break-up before the long distance takes its toll on their relationship.
The episode ends with Rachel appearing at the auditorium to confront Finn to tell him that he will always be her first love and hopefully her last but she cant be with him anymore. She says that he needs to find himself before they can make another attempt at their relationship. Coldplay's "The Scientist" was the perfect finale song performed by all the ex-lovers. The original song itself is hauntingly beautiful, add some beautiful harmonization and you've got yourself a performance that won't be soon forgotten.
"Glee" will be back on November 8 with the episode titled, "The Role You Were Born To Play."
