The cable network garnered a total of 86 nominations followed by ABC, with a solid 70 and NBC with 69. Other top network contenders include: CBS (44), Fox (28) and PBS (24).
This year's Emmy voters showed a lot of love for first-timers and a lot less, in some cases, none for old favorites. Emmy freshman raked in 60 percent of the nominations.
Here is a brief list of notable Emmy snubs and newcomer love:
- ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” received a paltry one nomination for Felicity Huffman.
- The diagnosis is lukewarm for “Grey’s Anatomy” which earned four supporting nominations this year, but none for Patrick Dempsey or Ellen Pompeo.
- A panning from critics about the a sub par season destroyed the chances for Fox’s “ 24” to secure a nom for best drama series to where newcomers Fox’s “Boston Legal” and NBC’s “Heroes” join former nominees “Sopranos” and “House.”
- ABC’s comedy freshman “Ugly Betty” won’t be a wallflower at this year’s formal: the series cleaned up nicely wit a total of 11 nominations, including noms for best comedy series and a noms for the show’s stars America Ferrera and Vanessa Williams.
- For the first time, Survivor does not make the cut in the reality show category.
- One category remained safe from newcomers – best lead actor in a drama series. Only returning nominees will battle it out in this category: Gandolfini (“Sopranos,”) Kiefer Sutherland (“24,”) James Spader (“Boston Legal,”) and Hugh Laurie (Fox’s “House M.D.”).
Fox broadcasts the Academy of Television and Arts’ 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on September 16 at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT) from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The Academy's black tie Governor's Ball will be hosted next door at the Shrine Exhibition Hall after the awards ceremony.
Primetime emmy nominees Jon Cryer and Kyra Sedgwick, along with the Television Academy's CEO and Chairman, Dick Askin, announced the nominees early Thursday morning at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood.
Sedgwick received a nomination for Actress in a Drama Series for her starring role in "The Closer." Cryer is a nominee in the Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category for "Two and a Half Men."
