Ladies Of The Daytime Emmys
Posted by Tommy Garrett on May 24, 2009 - 9:30:13 PM

HOLLYWOOD—This year’s Emmy nominations has sent shockwaves throughout the industry. But there are two nominations that simply are well deserved and here’s hoping that Julie Pinson and Susan Flannery win in their categories. Pinson is nominated in the Supporting Actress category and  Flannery in the Lead Actress category. Both are included with greats.  Flannery especially is up against Jeanne Cooper, who is Katherine Chancellor on CBS’s number one daytime drama “The Young & the Restless.”

But new to Pinson is her nomination. Julie Pinson started in the soap genre in 1997 when she was hired by casting guru Mark Teschner for a “General Hospital” spin off, “Port Charles.” The series was not long lived but Pinson soon made a name for herself in the soap genre as a solid actress, not just beautiful. Pinson joined “As The World Turns” just over a year ago and has taken the role of Janet by storm. The character arrived in Oakdale as a single mom to a teenage girl named Liberty. She then fell in love with divorced single dad and cop Jack Snyder, played by Michael Park.

Pinson has shown great growth while working under the tutelage of the wonderfully talented director, writer and producer Christopher Goutman. Goutman is known throughout the industry for finding actors who have a gift, bringing them on his show and making stars and amazing performers out of them. Pinson was open to this and thus has achieved all she should have and it’s culminated into an Emmy nomination for the talented star. In the category of Best Supporting Actress in a Drama, here’s hoping that Julie Pinson prevails as the winner. After a year with love, pain, tears and great emotional upheaval in the life of Janet Snyder. It’s time to give the damsel who portrays her the award which she so justly and richly deserves.

Then there is actress Susan Flannery who has portrayed Stephanie Forrester on the amazing series “The Bold & the Beautiful” for over two decades. Flannery was the most powerful actress on the series for the first decade and has maintained that prime spot. She works with Bradley P. Bell, who is known as the sultan of storylines in this industry. When you think the Forrester clan can’t possibly find more trouble to engage in, Bell like his late father Bill Bell, Sr. comes up with a more amazing twist and turn for his favorite family.

Susan has won the award for Best Actress in a Daytime Drama on many occasions. Her first award in 1975 came while on the NBC series “Days of Our Lives” as ever emotional Laura Horton. But after she joined “B&B” she became even more popular with fans and her peers. In 2000 Susan won Best Actress Award again, this time as Stephanie Forrester on the CBS series she joined. She then for “B&B” won two more Emmys. They were in 2002 and 2003. And has been nominated twice since. But alas this is Susan’s year again. The actress has been doing some incredible work since her character Stephanie has divorced husband Eric, who is now with a much younger but not so substantial new wife Donna Logan.

Flannery performed with her innate style and skill as a thespian in 2008 while pressing herself and her skills to become an even stronger actress. It is an awesome and amazing sight to see a actress carry herself and her craft to such heights. She could not do so alone. With costars like Jack Wagner, Lesley Anne Down, Ronn Moss and Katherine Kelly Lang. Flannery approaches her work with a silent storm approach. With Bell writing and constructing the lives of the denizens of L.A., we are sure to see a great deal of emotional turmoil and excitement on the hit show for years to come.

Julie Pinson and Susan Flannery both show their peers what the best actresses in the daytime industry are capable of doing. Susan has done primetime and films. Garnering a Golden Globe win in 1975 for Most Promising Newcomer-Female in her role in 1974’s “The Towering Inferno.” The Hollywood Foreign Press knew what they were thinking.

Standouts in 2008 who were shockingly left out of the Emmy award nominations for this season include Kyle Lowder of “The Bold & the Beautiful,” who showcased some of the best work of any young man in the industry last year. Kyle should have been nominated but here’s hoping for better luck next year. And then there is Grayson McCouch of “As The World Turns” who has never settled for being mediocre as an actor on his show. Grayson sets the bar really high for himself and others as a performer and it was a real shock to not hear his name called on Thursday, May 14.

Daytime never comes without surprises. But the two previous actors named would have been great additions to the lineup of stars named as excellent performers in the daytime drama genre. Next week we’ll give the names of two actors nominated, who deserve to win the Daytime Emmy.
