Leading Ladies, Setting Things Right

HOLLYWOOD—This week’s Leading Ladies Gold Standard goes to three beautiful and extremely talented actresses, who are popular with viewers and critics of daytime TV. Susan Flannery, who portrays Stephanie Forrester on CBS’s “The Bold and the Beautiful”; Heather Tom, who portrays Katie Logan on the same soap; and Sharon Case, who portrays Sharon Newman on CBS’s “The Young and the Restless,” are my choices for the best actresses this week. All three know how to tug at viewers’ emotions. Emmy® winners Flannery and Tom had great scenes this week, while Case had a marathon of emotions to play.
Susan Flannery is unstoppable as Queen Stephanie Forrester on the popular soap “B&B.” Her acting range is as vast as the world’s great oceans and the emotions come easily for the stunning beauty. Viewers this week enjoyed seeing Stephanie start to put things into perspective for other characters. Isn’t this what she does best? Starting with longtime nemesis and perennial daughter-in-law Brooke Logan, Stephanie blasted her for causing problems between Ridge and not only his father Eric, but now his son Thomas. Brooke wasn’t the last on Stephanie’s “to do” list. Next up were her grandchildren Thomas and Steffy. Both are scheming mirror images of their grandmother, but she reminded them that it is she, who founded Forrester Creations and it is their father who is CEO. Never get between Stephanie and her favorite son Ridge, or between Stephanie and Brooke if you want to come out unscathed.
Just as protective of her family and marriage is Katie Logan, the youngest of the Logan girls from Van Nuys on “B&B.” Played brilliantly by Heather Tom, she’s made a role once dour and sullen, now one of the most exciting in daytime TV. The writing obviously has a great deal to do with the change in Katie’s demeanor, but the actress did a wonderful job this week standing strong with her sisters against her husband in an effort to make him realize how serious their marital issues and his anger management are to their future. Tom’s tears are as authentic as her beauty, and this week we got to see both in all its glory.
Fans want to know what more Sharon Newman can possibly endure? To ask the show’s head writer and executive producer Maria Bell, you’d hear a defiant, much more! That being said, Case is doing a marvelous job as the ever-suffering heroine, who can’t find a break in life. After losing a child to a vehicle accident, her marriage crumbled. Then she got pregnant and was told her baby died, only to find out months later that her current husband kidnapped it and gave the child to Ashley Newman. From that moment until now, Sharon’s faced it all, but this week she went on the run from the law after being found guilty of second degree murder. The character has died her hair brown, but that can’t hide such beauty. The actress is on a path to becoming one of the all-time greats of Hollywood.
