HOLLYWOOD—This week’s Leading Men Gold Standard goes to two handsome and talented actors, who are extremely popular on their soaps. They also played men this week who had tough decisions to make, all revolving around their current family dysfunction. Ronn Moss, who portrays Ridge Forrester on CBS’s “The Bold and the Beautiful” and Daniel Goddard, who plays Aussie hunk Cane Ashby on CBS’s “The Young and the Restless” both were magnificent this week, in very different ways.
Actor Ronn Moss is one of the warmest and most gracious men on the planet. However, uber spoiled rich guy Ridge is usually a self-centered Beverly Hills playboy, who often can’t choose between the two women (Taylor and Brooke) who have been in love with him for a quarter of a century. This week Ridge had to stop looking at his own love life and take a sharper look at his daughter Steffy’s. Last week Ridge found out that Steffy married his stepdaughter Hope’s fiancé. That’s right. No sooner did Liam find that Hope had taken her engagement ring off, before placing it right on her stepsister’s finger. Ridge believes in his heart that Liam is a good guy, but is embroiled in a love triangle. He’s right! Moss played the loving father and concerned and loving stepfather with aplomb.
Ridge should be able to empathize with Liam, since the current state of affairs seems to be one that Ridge has been embroiled in for decades. However, Moss knows how to play it, without putting his acting and his character’s emotions over the top. We all know that Ridge’s cool exterior is the cover for a man who is a virtual genius, much like his mother, Queen Stephanie. I enjoy Ronn Moss’s work, as I always have, and so does millions of other viewers of “B&B.”
“Y&R’s” Daniel Goddard is forever second guessing his character when asked about Cane by the media. However, I see just what Maria Bell’s plan is. To keep an edgy Cane, never to make him boring and lifeless. That’s why Cane is forever keeping secrets from his wife Lily and step mom Jill. This week that may have deadly consequences, however, lets talk about last week. Goddard’s performance is always dependable, on fire and exciting. When Cane began plotting his own father’s downfall with Detective Ronan Malloy, we knew that it would be a great storyline for his portrayer, Daniel Goddard.
What I didn’t realize was how great Daniel would be in finding new facets to Cane, and making the role surprising to longtime “Y&R” viewers. Yes, it’s a lot of great writing on this show, but I also have to give some credit to the man who embodies the Aussie Cane. Daniel Goddard really has had a marathon few years on “Y&R.” And much like Billy Miller, the guy comes through with flying colors. Lets hope we’ll continue to see more of Cane in the near future, even after his father, Colin’s downfall occurs. It’s definitely imminent. Don’t miss it!
“Y&R” and “B&B” air weekdays on CBS.
