"Monster" Coming To HBO
Posted by Luis Cuevas on Apr 25, 2013 - 10:28:03 AM

HOLLYWOOD—On Thursday, April 25, Guillermo Del Toro announced that he is going to bring the Monster Manga series to HBO. Del Toro closed a deal to adapt  “Monster” written and illustrated by Naoki Urasawa and distributed by Shogakukan Inc.

The series began in 1995 in Japan, but it took another decade to be translated and distributed in the United States. The story focuses around a young doctor, Dr. Kenzo Tenma who has everything one could possibly want in their life; a beautiful fiancée and tons of support. Dr. Kenzo makes the decision to save a young boy, Johan that came in with a wound to the head instead of Dusseldorf’s Mayor who succumbs to his wounds.

Ten years later the boy he saved was part of a psychological experiment and he goes crazy and begins to kill people. The local authorities believe its Tenma and he must do all he can to prevent Johan from killing his own sister.

Del Toro will serve as executive producer for the show and director, he will also co-write episodes with Steven Thompson (“Sherlock,” “Dr. Who”). Del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth,” “ Pacific Rim,” “Mama”) is a Hispanic director who rose to prominence with his visual touch on his films and his story telling.

Don Murphy, Susan Montford and Gary Ungar will serve as non-writing executive producers. The Japanese company Shogakukan will serve as consultants.
