“New Girl” Back For More Laughs
Posted by LaDale Anderson on Sep 25, 2012 - 8:25:18 PM

HOLLYWOOD—For some odd reason, one theme song has been stuck in my head for the past week: “Who’s that girl? Who’s that girl?  It’s Jess!”  That’s right, that unforgettable theme song from “New Girl.”  The series returned Tuesday night for its second season with more laughs than ever.  While “Modern Family” is one of my favs, “New Girl” is slowly gaining speed.

Audiences were treated with two episodes for the night.  How often does that happen?  The first episode “Re-Launch” followed quirky Jess (Zooey Deschanel) as she received the news that she lost her teaching job.  You absolutely feel for her. Anyone who has lost a job or knows someone unemployed gets the feeling. The emotions are over the top.

To cope with the loss, she was allowed to take two items from the lost and found box: a tin hat and a pair of green glasses which Cece (Hannah Simone) rocked to cheer Jess up. Schmidt (Max Greenfield) relished in his new found freedom to get his groove back after a summer of being in a cast. Without going into too much detail, watch the episode for further details. To celebrate, he planned a “re-branding” party to establish his manhood. After a bunch of pouty begging, Schmidt allowed Jess to be his drink girl at the party. I could not be the only one that witnessed the ever evolving chemistry between Jess and Nick (Jake Johnson); these two are destined for each other.

As much as you want them to be together, you hope it doesn’t happen as it could affect the dynamic between the two. We were treated to another flashback of fat Schmidt in a classroom with a “plan” that did not go accordingly.  Winston (Lamorne Morris) got drunk on girly drinks as Cece shocked Schmidt by introducing him to her new boy toy. The episode wrapped with Schmidt making a fool of himself yet again by dabbling with a fire trick gone wrong and Nick giving Jess the hard truth about putting on her big girl pants.

While episode one got off to a great start, episode two “Katie” took the laughs to new heights as Jess found it imperative to keep herself busy in order to hide the fact that she’s unemployed. That painting of the roommates was spot on; of course Schmidt, the self-absorbed ego-manic was not impressed with her talent. Nick told Jess to let loose, do what she wants and did she ever. “I can drink at 11am,” said a free spirited Jess. It was that drink that opened a ton of male suitors out to grab Jess’ attention.

First there was Andy, who seemed to be on a similar journey as Jess; she liked him so much she asked Nick to set her up on a date. However, she did not expect Bearclaw, Andy’s obnoxious friend, to be so loud.  There was also the guy who confused Jess for his blind date, her name being “Katie.”  Jess being Jess played along.  It led to a one night stand that she flaunted in her roomies face.  Winston was a bit nervous about his mother visiting, but Schmidt was overly eager to please Winston’s mom who is not a fan of his.

Schmidt, the ultimate womanizer, set his sights on Winston’s basketball playing sister. He didn’t have a chance in hell, but Schmidt never gives up.  Nick occupied his time by speaking with older Nick who claimed to be from the future; only Nick could fall for something so stupid, but we enjoy watching every bit of it.

The highlight of the episode involved Jess being busted by all three of her suitors: Andy, Bearclaw and her one night stand. A heated Bearclaw screamed “Liar, you liar” as Jess watched in horror. Ultimately, Jess went home solo, but surprisingly her one night stand showed up at the door admitting that he had lied to her also. A new relationship is on the horizon, but how long will it last? The episode wrapped with Schmidt challenging Winston’s sister to a basketball game where she demolished him.

What I love about “New Girl” is its ability to slide in so many adult jokes that most people would not catch. The jokes are there, but you have to listen intently to catch each of them. We are off to a great comedy start this fall season and I can not wait to see what other antics Jess, Nick, Winston, Cece and Schmidt will ultimately get into this season.
