LOS ANGELES—“American Idol” has seen the departure of Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler as an opportunity to bring on a judge from a completely different genre. Speculation between Urban and Nicki Minaj for the next judge left viewers desperate to know who would fill the third seat. The new judge will join Mariah Carey and Randy Jackson.
Urban is widely known for his talent as a country singer; additionally, he has had experience as a judge in Australia’s version of “The Voice.” Rumors had circulated that Brad Paisley was sought after for the country judge of the show. Paisley wanted to be paid as much as Mariah Carey at $8 million, but he was denied. Urban stands as the country vote for the show.
Nicki Minaj has also been selected as a possible new judge for “American Idol” over Katie Perry. The rapper has yet to be selected as she endorses Pepsi, and Coca-Cola supports “American Idol”. If Minaj is chosen she will be paid as much as Mariah Carey including funds for clothing, make up and hair.
Season 12 will begin next year.
