“The Following” Spine-Chilling Finale
Posted by LaDale Anderson on Apr 30, 2013 - 6:13:53 PM

HOLLYWOOD—“The Following” is one of those shows that fans of a great thriller asks for.  It has been a guilty pleasure that keeps audiences coming back week after week; you never know quite who’s a part of Joe Carroll’s (James Purefoy) master plan.  Monday night’s season finale was beyond epic, it was mind-blowing and I’m still recovering from all of the jolts that were delivered.

The FBI began heavy investigating to locate Agent Parker’s (Annie Parisee) location.  Weston (Shawn Ashmore) and Ryan (Kevin Bacon) came face-to-face with a kid wearing a frightening mask with a phone number that allowed the agents to speak to a panicked Parker who found herself buried alive. It was quite tense; I can only imagine the horror of being buried alive.

Claire (Natalie Zea) found herself locked away in a secluded home on a beach near a lighthouse, as Joe threatened his former love with a gun.  She continued to push his buttons about his proposed “ending” that he has set-up which is quite predictable in her opinion.  Frazzled by her words, he chooses to lock her away with a mystery man who appears to play a role in Joe’s master plan.

Joe’s follower’s set-up a trap to take out both Weston and Ryan, but Ryan got the upper hand and begins to viciously beat the guilty party to squeeze information about Agent Parker’s whereabouts, gving him free range to do what he wants. Both Weston and Ryan got much pleasure in beating Joe’s protégé to a pulp to get information from him, the torture got so brutal legs were broken and eyes were close to being gouged.  The scary part is who wouldn’t have done the same thing in such a dire situation.

FBI agent Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore).

Our favorite serial killer showed a bit of emotion as he professed his love to Claire, while implying that her fate would soon be revealed.  Parker begged Ryan and Weston to contact her baby sister and family to inform them of the situation as she began to lose hope. The agents began to grapple with some serious emotions that got the best of both of them.  They reached Parker’s location and ferociously began digging for her body; her lifeless body laid as Ryan did everything in his power to save his colleague, but it was too late.  Ryan’s fury was at its peak as he shot and killed Joe’s follower!  He’s out for blood and Joe should be scared.

Inside the casket they discover Joe’s book outlining what happens next.  Ryan discovers that he must go alone to locate Claire.  He threatened Weston to stay back as he went searching for Joe.  In a surprise twist, Weston was to die in Carroll’s book, but he somehow survived. Claire was stunned to see Joe murder a man right in front of her, giving her an idea of what it meant “to kill someone.”  Ryan met with Carroll's protégé Emma who wanted his gun and phone, but he found himself drugged.

Claire, Joe and Ryan were all reunited once and for all. His plan involved him killing Claire first which would be complete torture to Ryan as he pleaded that he kill him first; it created a bit of disillusion for Joe that rattled his cages. A bunch of heightened words forced Joe to lose composure and gave Ryan the upper hand as he pursued his foe.  In an unexpected turn of event, a shoot-out engulfed a boathouse in flames trapping Joe Carroll and leading to his demise.  The agents questioned whether or not Joe Carroll is truly dead. Remains were found, but everyone was concerned about confirmation, but dental records proved it was indeed Joe’s body.  Emma was a complete mess upon learning about Joe’s death.

The audience was in for a shocker when it was revealed that Ryan’s sister, Molly was inside the apartment.  Now that’s how you conclude a season finale.  Claire was stabbed and so was Ryan.  So are they dead or still alive?  Audiences will be forced to wait several months for those answers, which will leave us anticipating the result.  Truly an ending worth dying for!
