'What Lies Ahead' For 'The Walking Dead'
Posted by Contributor on Oct 17, 2011 - 11:10:51 PM

HOLLYWOOD—Last night “The Walking Dead” returned to AMC. The show that shocked viewers last season, entertained the masses and won over critics was even better for the first episode of the second season. The characters are now all part of our lives, we care about the survival of the last humans on earth, but the dead that are walking the earth are even more bloodthirsty and hungry for human flesh.

The wait is over, now we are back to rooting for our favorites and their survival. This season even the kids are fair game for the writers, as they know how to pull at our emotions and bring out excitement. This show probably will raise your blood pressure, as it’s scary, dramatic, poignant and moving.

Like any group of people fighting to survive the deadly Walkers. There are certain characters who fight for dominance over others, and maybe it’s just their burning desire to survive a deadly invasion. One of the most pulse-pounding scenes was when the group had to duck under a number of broken down cars on the highway and remain calm and quiet while hundreds of Walkers surrounded them and were on a mission to find food. Food being anyone living. When a young girl was heard and seen by a Walker, who chased her unsuccessfully through the woods, she managed to evade her attackers, but another little boy was not so lucky.

One of the most majestic sights last night was the deathly silence of seeing all the abandoned cars on the highway. Then one of the most frightening sights was watching the zombies attack innocent victims. Some of which, we know will not make it through the season. The emotional nature of being the last living human survivors on the planet is almost palpable when you look into the tearful eyes of so many characters, all wanting to fight for life and to go on living, but having to fight a deadly creature that you cannot even recognize anymore.

The lead character Rick has become very hardened and determined in killing the zombies this season. The show has morphed from watching these character attempt to evade the creatures into a series that now the humans are fighting back, and so far not winning. The interesting thing is that all of the character are changing drastically. Though wouldn’t that be a natural progression of being hunted by the undead?

I'm also glad that Rick's son, Carl, finally got to do something more than stand in the background. Not only was he finding some helpful weapons and bravely trying to assist in the hunt for Sophia, but he had multiple speaking lines. It looks like it's time to finally start exploring his character further and see how youth are affected by the end of the world.

That final scene, while inducing another form of drawn out suspense, was a great cliffhanger. Is that really it for Carl? Probably not, but in this world, nobody is ever safe. It looks like Rick has another big episode coming next week.

The episode titled “What Lies Ahead” was a great beginning for the second season. There were so many pivotal moments, but not all dramatic and eerie. Some were warm and engrossing, but the 90-minute long episode was definitely worth waiting a year to see our favorite zombie series return. To quote a line from “The Sixth Sense.” “I see dead people!” And aren’t we glad that’s the case?

Don’t miss the second season of “The Walking Dead” on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. only on AMC.
