A Three Star Celebration Under the August Moon

The Thalians are dedicated to solving America’s No. 1 health problem: mental illness. More people suffer from mental disorders than all other diseases combined.
A bit of history
: In 1955, The Thalians was founded by a group of (then) young show-biz people looking to shed their "wild and crazy" image and to project themselves more accurately as dedicated and caring contributors to society, and discovered a common interest – children’s mental problems. This group, which included Debbie Reynolds, Ruta Lee, Bob Petersen, David Wolper, and Hugh O’Brian, forged their dream and they named themselves after the Greek muse of comedy, Thalia. In 1959, a single story building was erected on the grounds of Mt. Sinai Hospital. Today we are three stories tall and service over 3,000 patients a month.
In 1998 we began a program of honoring our individual benefactors of $100,000 by creating a Walk of Stars at The Thalians Mental Health Center at Cedars Sinai Medical Center for The Thalians Presidents Club.
On August 10, 2003, we honored three new Star Walkers, Wallis Annenberg, Jean Martin Nelson (widow of legendary dancer Gene Nelson) and Stephanie Rosenbloom, in memoriam. The event's theme was "Teahouse of the August Moon." The razz-a-ma-tazz started with a trumpeter’s fanfare (in full costume). Reynolds (President) and Lee (Chairman of the Board) greeted each honoree (Paula Kent Meehan accepted for Wallis Annenberg and Larry Rosenbloom accepted for his wife) and presented a plaque as well as revealed their stars in the Walk. Parasols were given to each guest to shield the hot mid-afternoon August sun and added to the already colorful proceedings.
The party proceeded to the estate of Paula Kent Meehan, a long time Thalians supporter and hostess for the evening. Her home, a former residence of Elvis Presley, was enlarged when she purchased the adjacent property, which she turned into an authentic Japanese garden, with teahouse, pavilion, Koi pond and Noh Theatre. Enjoying the Taiko drummers, Fujimi Classical Dancers, Koto player, and Aura Readings by Stephany Hurkos, as well as the tasty Saki Bar, were Rene Taylor and Joe Bologna, Red Buttons, Dr. and Mrs. Irwin Lehrhoff (founder of The Thalians President’s Club), France Nuyen ("World of Suzie Wong"), Carol Connors (wrote the Rocky theme) and Steven Broidy, Cedars Sinai Chairman of the Board and Jack Carter among the 105 guests. The delicious food was by the phenomenal Renaissance. Dan Klemuk of The Greenbriar, was the design decorator who turned the Thalians Star ceremony into a balloon extravaganza with banners and know-how sparkle as well as created the inviting Teahouse entrance with antique rickshaws and glowing lanterns. Klemuk even arranged the most spectacular full moon, which only added to the serenity, luster and magic of the evening.
One flaw – it came to an end. But… with The Thalians, there is always something up their charitable and volunteering sleeves. The event raised more than $20,000 from donations. It’s a salute to the ongoing generosity of our many friends.See you next month.
