Posted by LaDale Anderson on Jul 21, 2014 - 6:54:20 PM

BIRMINGHAM, MICHIGAN—Broadway acting legend and singing sensation Elaine Stritch passed away at her home in Birmingham, Michigan on July 17. Born in Detroit, Stritch grew to fame with her Broadway debut in 1946’s “Loco.”

She was nominated five times for a Tony award, winning once for her Best Special Theatrical Event for her one-woman show “Elaine Stritch at Liberty.” She was also nominated in 1956 for Best Featured Actress in a Play for “Bus Stop.” She was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1995 and parlayed much of her stage success into television.

The actress was nominated for a total of eight Emmy Awards, winning three times: Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for “Law & Order,” Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety Program for “Elaine Stritch at Liberty” and Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for “30 Rock.” Her latest work included portraying the hard as nails mother of Alec Baldwin’s character on NBC’s “30 Rock.”

She appeared in more than 20 feature films including 1956’s “Three Violent People” alongside Charleston Heston and received rave reviews for her performance in Woody Allen’s “September.” The actress also appeared on the ABC soap “One Life to Live” where she portrayed the mother of popular villain Carlo Hesser (Thom Christopher).

Stritch was 89 years-old at the time of her passing, and died of natural causes. The actress had recently suffered a decline in her health over the last few years, including battling her diabetes.
