Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher Dies
Posted by Carmen Herrera on Apr 8, 2013 - 11:22:07 PM

LONDONFormer Conservative British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, died in the morning of Monday, April 8 after suffering a stroke at age 87.

Lady Thatcher, who was known alternatively as the “Iron Lady,” passed away in London, England in the Ritz Hotel that she had been staying since Christmas. Following a series of health problems, which included strokes that would force her to retire from public speaking, Lady Thatcher's health would only worsen through the years.

Tim Bell, who was the spokesperson of Mrs. Thatcher, released a statement Monday saying: "It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning. A further statement will be made later."

Lord Bell also spoke on her final months and the deteriorating health that took her life: “She wasn’t well, and had been deteriorating for some months. She still had times when she was like her old self but most of the time she was in frail health in recent months.”

Deemed as one of the most powerful Prime Ministers of the country, Lady Thatcher was the first and only female Prime Minister of Britain. She took office on May 4, 1979 until November 28, 1990, totaling for one of the longest tenures in the countries history. Her determined-conservative principles were later deemed as “Thatcherism,” which promoted anti-communism, free markets, traditionalism and anti-trade unionism.

Former prime minister Tony Blair released a statement saying: "Margaret Thatcher was a towering political figure. Very few leaders get to change not only the political landscape of their country but of the world. Margaret was such a leader. Her global impact was vast.."

Lady Thatcher would also become one of President Ronald Reagan’s closest allies in fighting communism during the Cold War in the eighties and her popularity rose in the country following the victory over the Falkland Islands against Argentina in 1982, leading to her re-election in 1983 and for a third term in 1987.

President Barack Obama released a statement saying, "the world has lost one of the great champions of freedom and liberty, and America has lost a true friend. Here in America, many of us will never forget her standing shoulder to shoulder with President Reagan, reminding the world that we are not simply carried along by the currents of history—we can shape them with moral conviction, unyielding courage and iron will."

Former First Lady and widow of President Reagan, Nancy Reagan remembered Thatcher saying they "had a very special relationship.”

"I think people thought she and I didn't have a relationship," Reagan stated. "Nothing could be farther from the truth. And of course I loved it that she and Ronnie were as close as they were.”

After being challenged for the leadership of the Conservative Party and losing support from the public and her Cabinet, Thatcher resigned from Prime Minister in 1990 and was succeeded by John Major.

Margaret Thatcher was also portrayed by Meryl Streep in the 2011 biopic “The Iron Lady,” which she won her third Academy Award at the 2012 Oscars. Streep herself released a statement, calling Thatcher “a pioneer, willingly or unwillingly, for the role of women in politics.”

"It is hard to imagine a part of our current history that has not been affected by measures she put forward in the UK at the end of the 20th century,” continued Streep. “I wish to convey my respectful condolences to her family and many friends.”

Though no official date has been announced, her ceremonial funeral will take place in London and her ashes will be laid to rest beside her husband, Denis, who died in 2003, at the Royal Hospital in Chelsea.
