Documentary Filmmaker and Academy Award Winner Michael Moore posted on his Twitter various tweets about the time he met the Venezuelan president. “Venice Film Fest '09. My crew & I were told Hugo Chavez was staying in the room above me. And, he was. We spoke for over an hour. He said he was happy 2 finally meet someone Bush hated more than him.”

Sean Penn, a two-time Academy Award winner for "Mystic River" and "Milk," released a statement mourning the loss of the Venezuelan president in it saying he had lost a great friend. Academy Award winning Director Oliver Stone whose notable works are "Scarface," "Platoon" and "JFK" also gave his condolences to the Venezuelan president stating the world had lost a hero.

Chavez had been battling cancer since 2011 and was being treated in Cuba. He had come out publicly that he had beat cancer in 2012, but by November Chavez had made plans to return to Cuba to be once again treated for cancer.
