2012 MLB All-Star Home Run Derby
Posted by Eric Lemus on Jul 9, 2012 - 6:33:39 PM

KANSAS CITY, MO—Robinson Cano received a not-so-warm welcome during the Home Run Derby in Kansas City as the Royals faithful drowned the Yankee second-baseman and American League Derby captain with a chorus of boos as he settled into the batter's box and cheers whenever he made an out.

Cano, last year's home run champ, finished with zero home runs, much to the approval of the Kansas City crowd. The reason why the crowd was so anti-Cano? Cano, who chose the other three American League contestants, decided not to go with Kansas City Royals' All-Star Billy Butler, as a member of the derby team.

After the first round, Jose Bautista led all scores with 11 home runs. He advanced to the second round along with the Angels' Mark Trumbo, Carlos Beltran of the St. Louis Cardinals, and Prince Fielder of the Detroit Tigers.

Meanwhile, National League captain and Los Angeles Dodgers fan-favorite, Matt Kemp had woeful showing. Kemp was only able to connect on one home run, but I'm sure Dodger fans are just happy he is healthy enough to compete.

In the second round, Prince Fielder and Mark Trumbo went long..and I do mean LONG. Fielder hit homer after homer into the Kauffman Stadium fountains while Trumbo took aim at the concession stands. Prince advanced to the finals, but Trumbo was left out after he lost in a five-pitch swing-off to Jose Bautista.

In the final round, Prince Fielder went first and he set the bar high. He continued to put on a show, splash down after splash down, bomb after bomb.

In the end, Prince was just too much for Joey Bats (Bautista) and he took the crown home.
