SAN FRANCISCO—San Francisco Giants all-star outfielder, Melky Cabrera, has been suspended 50 games for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs Wednesday.

Major League Baseball's current policy on positive steroid tests, adopted in 2006, calls for a 50 game suspension for a player's first violation, 100 for his second, and a lifetime for a third.

The positive test for testosterone had been known about for at least a few weeks, MLB's decision came after an appeal by Cabrera.

For his part, Cabrera took full responsibility for the positive test and released a statement. "My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used. I accept my suspension under the Joint Drug Program and I will try to move on with my life. I am deeply sorry for my mistake and I apologize to my teammates, to the San Francisco Giants organization and to the fans for letting them down."

The 28-year old Dominican was having an MVP caliber season. Along with winning All-Star Game MVP, Cabrera had been batting .346 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs. His 159 hits through 113 games led all of baseball.

The Giants are currently in a dead heat with the Los Angeles Dodgers at the top of the NL West. The Giants had recently benefited from the return of all-star, Pablo Sandoval, to the lineup after a stint on the disabled list, but losing Cabrera will be a major blow to the team's playoff hopes.
