MIAMI—On Sunday, June 9, the NBA announced a new season award, the Twyman-Stokes Award which is given to the teammate of the year. NBA players selected Chauncey Billups, the guard for the Los Angeles Clippers, as the inaugural recipient of the award.
The award is based on hall of fame NBA players Jack Twyman and Maurice Stokes whose friendship transcended there on court accomplishments. They will be permanently honored with an annual NBA award in their names given to the best teammate. They played in the NBA together for the Rochester/Cincinnati Royals from 1955 to 1958. During a regular season game, Stokes suffered an on court injury that left him in a coma, which led to a brain injury that permanently damaged his motor control skills. Twyman supported Stokes for the rest of his life and eventually became his legal guardian and advocate.
The NBA will make a $25,000 donation to the charity of Chauncey Billups choice. The decision was made by a panel of NBA legends who than picked six players from each conference. The award is also based on the on court and off court leadership of the player and being a mentor and role model to other players.
