TORONTO—The Toronto Raptors have signed D.J. Augustin as a backup point guard. Augustin was signed to a one-year deal so he can help out starting point guard Kyle Lowry.

Toronto Raptors president and general manager Masai Ujiri has had a busy off-season since taking over basketball duties from the departed Bryan Colangelo. His biggest move was to trade under-performing Andrea Bargnani to the New York Knicks in exchange for expiring contracts. The addition of Augustin along with Demar Derozan and Rudy Gay should help the Raptors a lot.

The 25-year old defensive specialist was drafted out of Texas, ninth overall by Charlotte in 2008. Augustin has averaged 9.6 points and four assists in 24.5 minutes of play in 358 career games with the Indiana Pacers and Charlotte Bobcats. His number did go down in the 2013 season, to 4.7 points, 2.2 assists and 16.1 minutes of play in 76 minutes of play while coming off the bench.
