UNITED STATES—On Sunday, March 24, Florida Gulf Coast became the first No. 15 seed to reach the sweet sixteen after beating San Diego State. FGCU beat San Diego 81-71 on Sunday night making it their second upset after beating No. 2 Georgetown in their opening game. Bernard Thompson had 23 points and Sherwood Brown had 17 points for FGCU on their way to the win. Christophe Varidel a native of Switzerland also contributed to the win with two early three-pointers finished with 11 points, after having zero against Georgetown. Brett Comer had 10 points against San Diego State including a game high 14 assists.
FGCU have shown joy unlike any team in a tournament with such high stakes. Florida used a 21-2 run to put Georgetown away in their first game. Against San Diego State Florida used a 17-0 run and by the end Florida had 71-52 lead with only four minutes to go in the ball game.
Florida Gulf Coast opened its campus in Fort Myers, Florida in 1997. The university only became eligible for postseason play last year. Their next game will be on Friday night in Dallas, TX against No. 3 Florida considered the main basketball university of the Florida system.
